The short answer
On Fisher & Paykel water escaping the machine is most often a door boot holding grit or split, not a split tub. Ranked that way because the direct-drive motor sits under the basket with no belt and no gearbox, which removes the usual noisy suspects and leaves the bearing and the pump.
What you observe
- Foam at the drawer or creeping out of the door — Detergent rather than a fault. Halve the dose and run a rinse.
- Clean water behind the machine with nothing running — An inlet hose or a tap fitting, not the machine itself.
- NEAR MISS: the floor is wet but so is the laundry, and the drum still holds water — That is a drainage fault with an overflow, and the drainage page is the one to read first.
Causes, most likely first on Fisher & Paykel
- The door seal or boot is holding grit, or has split — First here, where a modulating control hides a developing fault rather than announcing it. Water appears at the front on fill and wash, and stops on drain. Grit, hair and coins collect in the fold of the boot and hold it open; a split in the lower half puts water straight onto the floor at the door.
- An inlet hose or its washer is weeping — Second, and the cause this control is least able to tell you about. Clean water appears behind the machine whether or not a cycle is running. The rubber washer in the hose end hardens with age, and an over-tightened fitting cracks the plastic behind it.
- The drain hose connection is leaking — Third. Grey water appears only during the drain phase.
- The outer tub, the pump seal or the bearing seal has failed — Last, and it is the reason the order above matters. Water arrives from the centre underneath, every cycle, with good hoses, a clean boot and no foam.
Check in this order, and why
- Fold back the door boot all the way round and look inside the fold — Water at the front of the machine during wash is nearly always the boot, and this finds it in a minute.
- Shut both supply taps, dry behind the machine and watch for an hour — It separates the supply plumbing from everything else and it costs nothing but time.
- Watch the back of the machine during the drain phase only — A leak confined to the drain phase is on the discharge side, which is a two-minute check.
What an owner can safely check
- Fold the boot back, clear the fold and wipe it dry, then inspect for splits — A split needs replacing; grit and residue just need cleaning out.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the machine before mopping behind it and shut both supply taps before touching any fitting. The outlet behind a washer sits exactly where the water collects, which is the real hazard here rather than the water itself. Get a second person before walking the machine out: they are far heavier than they look, especially full.
When to call a technician
Call when the boot is clean and sound, the foam is ruled out, every hose is dry and water still arrives from underneath, because that puts the fault in a tub or bearing seal. Call immediately if water is reaching the outlet or running under a neighbouring unit, and leave the machine unplugged with the taps off until then.
