The short answer
The Criterion URBD family is a single cabinet offered in two finishes — the rows below differ in trim, not in mechanism — so unlike the wider Criterion families there is no build to rule out before diagnosing. That makes the symptom pattern itself the most reliable guide: which compartment warmed first, and how fast, points at the cause directly.
What you observe
- Fresh-food side warm, freezer still hard-frozen — The airflow split, and the most common presentation on this cabinet.
- Cooling restored by a manual defrost, then lost again within days — The defrost circuit is not clearing the coil.
- Both compartments warming together over a day or two — Sealed-system territory rather than airflow.
- Heavy frost across the freezer rear panel — The air path over the evaporator has closed up.
- NEAR MISS — nothing running at all, no light — Power or control, which the page for a cabinet that will not start covers.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Defrost circuit not clearing the evaporator — First here. Because the family is one machine, the recovery-then-relapse pattern is diagnostic rather than suggestive: it is the defrost circuit almost every time.
- Evaporator fan not running — Second. From the front it looks the same as frost; the difference is no air at all with the door switch held in.
- Condenser coil or fan blocked — Third, and the cause that shows up first in hot weather.
- Door seal or alignment — Fourth on this family rather than second, because there is no second door build here to introduce a mismatched part.
- Sealed system or compressor — Last, least common, not owner-diagnosable, and the one that warms both compartments evenly.
Check in this order, and why
- Compare the two compartments against each other — On a single-mechanism family this one observation narrows the list further than anywhere else.
- Hold the freezer door switch in and listen for air movement — Silence is the fan; airflow with heavy frost is the defrost circuit.
- Defrost the cabinet manually and note how long the fix lasts — Days rather than weeks confirms the defrost circuit without any instrument.
- Pull the cabinet out and inspect the condenser and its fan — Last, and mostly a seasonal cause.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A rear evaporator panel comes off over live tubing and a defrost heater, so let ice melt rather than forcing the panel. Never open the sealed system or vent refrigerant — that is licensed work, and oil outside the tubing means the system is already open.

When to call a technician
Manual defrosting, condenser cleaning and seal checks are owner work. Call a technician when cooling is lost again within days of a defrost, when the evaporator fan is silent, or when both compartments warm together — the last needs licensed refrigerant equipment. Call at once if oil is visible outside the tubing.
