The short answer
Before anything else on the Costway FPI washer family, notice what the machine does when you press start. Silence with a dark panel is one page; a click and then nothing is another; a panel that lights and then simply waits is the third and the most common.
What you see on the FPI family
- The panel is completely dark — No lights, no beep. The outlet, the cord and the breaker are the whole question.
- The panel lights but the cycle never begins — The control has power and is missing a permission, most often the lid or door lock.
- You hear the lock click but nothing follows — The lock has engaged and the machine is waiting for water, which points at the taps or the inlet screens.
- A padlock or child icon is showing on the display — Control lock, set with a held press and cleared the same way. It refuses every press without explaining itself.
Causes, most likely first on the FPI family
- Lid or door lock not confirming — Ranked first on the FPI family — it is the most common reason a lit Costway washer refuses to start, and pressing the lid firmly while pressing start is a free test. The machine will not run until the lock reports closed. The striker wears, the latch drifts, and the switch ends up marginal while the lid still shuts normally to the hand.
- Water supply off, or inlet screens blocked — Second — and free to check: both taps should be fully open and the inlet screens should be clear. Many machines will not begin a cycle they cannot fill. A tap closed after a previous leak, or inlet screens silted up with scale, produces a machine that locks and then waits indefinitely.
- Control lock, delay start or a paused cycle — Third — and always worth ten seconds before any tool comes out. A held pad sets the lock on most panels, a bumped pad sets a delay, and a cycle paused hours ago still owns the machine. All three look exactly like a failure.
- No power, or the control board — Fourth — the board is the part people suspect first and the part that fails least. A dark machine is not being fed — outlet, cord or breaker. A board that has genuinely failed is rare and usually follows a supply event or a water intrusion at the panel.
- Body: The order below is this family's rather than the brand's: with one build in the FPI family the ranking is not an average diluted by chassis that fail differently, so the cause at the top is the cause that actually leads on FPI1218US-WH.
Check in this order, and why
- 1. Look at the panel before touching anything — Lit or dark decides which half of this page applies, and it costs nothing.
- 2. Clear any control lock, delay or paused cycle — Hold the lock pad until the icon clears, then cancel before starting a new cycle.
- 3. Press the lid or door firmly and press start again — If it runs when held, the lock is the fault rather than the control, and that is a cheap repair.
- Body: Because the FPI family is one model, the access route below is the access route — there is no second layout to hedge against, which is exactly what the page above this one has to do.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A standard US household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A at 120 V, and a washer stands where water reaches the floor, so isolate before kneeling down. Never defeat the lid lock to make the machine run open — it stops the drum for a reason.

When to call a technician
On the Costway FPI washer family the owner line is the outlet, the taps, the lock state and the feel of the lid. The lock assembly, the pressure switch and the board are service parts, and a machine that trips its breaker when plugged in should be left unplugged.
