The short answer
On the ASMN family the usual reason a Costway dryer is not starting is door switch not made. The door, the breaker, the plug, the duct and the belt check are owner work; anything behind the control panel is not.
What you observe on these models
- Completely dead, no lights and no beep — A supply question: the cord, the outlet or the breaker.
- A hum with no drum movement — Power present and rotation absent, which is the start circuit.
- The drum turns freely by hand with no resistance — A snapped belt, which on some machines also cuts the motor circuit.
- Panel lights but nothing happens on start — Power is reaching the controls, so the question is the start path rather than the supply.
- Drying times had been getting longer for weeks — The history that precedes an opened thermal fuse on a vented machine.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but produces no heat — That is a heating fault rather than a start fault, and that page is the right one.
Causes, most likely first on the ASMN family
- Door switch not made — Ranked first here: it ranks first where it does because it costs nothing to test — open and close the door firmly and listen for the click — and because it fails far more often than anything else in the start path.
- One leg of the supply lost, or a tripped breaker — Second: a double breaker with one half tripped is the usual version, and it is visible at the panel without any tool at all.
- Thermal fuse opened by a blocked vent — Third: the history usually gives it away: drying times had been getting longer for weeks before the machine stopped altogether.
- Control lock or delay start — Fourth: a lock engaged during cleaning, or a delay set by accident, gives a machine that beeps at the button and does nothing else.
- Broken belt or its safety switch — Fifth: on machines fitted with a belt switch, a snapped belt cuts the motor circuit so the machine will not even attempt to run, which looks electrical rather than mechanical.
- Cord, plug and outlet — Sixth: a plug that has worked loose, a scorched terminal or an outlet on a circuit that something else has tripped all leave the machine dead with nothing wrong inside it.
Check in this order, and why
- Open and close the door firmly and listen for the click — Free, instant, and it fails more often than anything else in the start path.
- Look at the breaker for a half-tripped double — Enough power for the panel and not for the motor is the classic lost-leg picture.
- Check the vent duct and the outside flap — A blocked duct is what opened the fuse, so clearing it is part of the fix.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate at the breaker or the plug before opening the cabinet, and wait a minute before touching anything — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The door switch stays wired as it is; it exists so the drum cannot turn on an open door. Lint is fuel, so clear the duct rather than working around it. On a gas machine, if you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

When to call a technician
Once the free checks are clean the remaining causes are few, and a visit is short. On a vented machine, clear the duct before the visit whatever else you do — an opened thermal fuse is a consequence rather than a cause, and a technician who replaces it without clearing the duct has not finished the job.
