The short answer
A drying cycle that stops early, runs forever or shuts down part way is nearly always an airflow or a sensing story, and the two are related: a machine that cannot move air cannot read its own load correctly either. On these models the two RV-WD rows are one build in two finishes. That is why the lint path comes first in the order below even when the complaint sounds electronic.
What you observe
- The cycle ends early with the load still damp — Automatic sensing has decided the load is dry when it is not.
- The cycle runs on and never finishes — The opposite reading of the same sensing, usually caused by poor airflow.
- It stops part way and will not restart for a while — A thermal device opening and then resetting as it cools, which is an airflow symptom.
- Timed cycles work and automatic ones do not — That separates sensing from everything mechanical in a single test.
- NEAR MISS — nothing happens at all when start is pressed — That is a start fault rather than a cycle fault, and it belongs on its own page.
Causes, most likely first on the RVWD models
- Restricted airflow — First on these machines by a wide margin. A packed filter, a crushed exhaust or a blocked outlet leaves hot damp air inside the drum, and everything the control decides afterwards is decided on bad information.
- Moisture sensing misreading — Second. The sensing strips read the load through contact, and a film of fabric softener on them convinces the machine a wet load is dry.
- Overloading or a badly sorted load — Third. A drum packed tight cannot tumble, so the outside dries, the centre stays wet and the cycle ends on the reading it gets.
- Thermal cycling from poor airflow — Fourth, and a consequence of the first: a machine that keeps stopping and restarting as it cools is protecting itself rather than failing.
- Control or timer — Last, and the only one that is not owner work. It is also the least likely of the five. No counted corpus covers these models, so this ranks mechanisms rather than measured shares.
Check in this order, and why
- Read the plate and confirm which of the pair you have — It takes a moment and then you can stop thinking about it: the two rows differ in finish letters, not in the parts this fault involves.
- Clear the lint filter and then the whole exhaust run — Filter, hose and outside outlet. This is the cause more often than everything below it combined.
- Run a timed cycle and compare it with an automatic one — If timed dries and automatic does not, the fault is sensing and nothing mechanical.
- Wipe the sensing strips inside the drum — A soft cloth and a little vinegar removes the softener film that causes false dry readings.
- Halve the load and run it again — A drum that can tumble dries evenly, and this separates loading from the machine in one go.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Lint is the hazard in a dryer: keep the filter clear and the exhaust path clear, and never run the machine with the exhaust disconnected inside a room. Do not reset a thermal device and carry on without clearing the airflow path first, and never leave a machine running unattended once it has cut out on temperature.

When to call a technician
Call when the airflow path is clear end to end, the sensing strips are clean and a timed cycle dries while the automatic one still fails, because what is left is sensing and control. Call sooner if the machine keeps cutting out on temperature after the exhaust has been cleared. Call at once if you smell scorching at any point in the cycle. Say which of the two finishes you have when you call. It will not change the part, but it settles the question before anyone travels.
