- Warm items were added — Give it a full day with the door shut before judging.
- Ice cream is soft — Check the load is not blocking the vents or the cold wall.
- The control has been changed — Controls get knocked, especially on a chest model where the dial is at the front.
- It never cycles off — Check the coils are clean and the clearances are adequate first.
- The compressor never runs — Check the outlet with another appliance and check the breaker.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor — Temperature and leaks can share a cause but they are different checks.

- A load packed too tight — Keep the freezer at 0 °F (−18 °C) and measure rather than guessing.
- Warm air entering past the door — The paper test round the whole door names the failing section.
- Defrost system fault — Lower because it applies only to auto-defrost models, but it is the classic gradual failure on those.
- No room to reject heat — It ranks in the middle because a freezer pushed tight into a corner or a cupboard has nowhere to send the heat.
- Loss of cooling capacity — On a compact freezer, ask for the repair figure before agreeing — it often approaches replacement.

- Check the gasket all the way round — Clean the seal and frame first; grease causes the same symptom.
- Decide what to keep and what to discard — This comes before any diagnosis.
- Confirm the complaint properly — Leave it a few hours with the door shut for a fair reading.
- Rearrange the contents — The most common cause on a compact freezer and completely owner-fixable.
- Empty it and let the frost melt — On an auto-defrost model, heavy frost instead points at a defrost fault.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Take care moving a loaded freezer: it is far heavier than it looks. Do not use a heat gun or a hair dryer inside the cabinet.
