The short answer
An ice maker is the most complicated assembly in a domestic refrigerator and the one owners judge most harshly. On the BR models most stoppages are supply-side or temperature-side, which means they are diagnosable from the kitchen with nothing in your hand.
The observable tells
- The bin is empty and the mould is dry — Nothing is arriving. That is a supply-side story: shut-off, line, valve or a frozen fill tube.
- NEAR MISS - production slowed in the first days after installation — A new cabinet takes time to reach temperature and purge the line. Give it a day or two before diagnosing.
- A plug of ice in the fill tube — Very often the whole fault on this family, and it is visible once the bin is out of the way.
- Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen — A partial fill - restricted supply, a clogged filter or a valve that closes early - rather than a failed module.
- Ice in the bin has welded into one block — Cubes are melting and refreezing, which points at a freezer that is cycling warm rather than at production.
Likeliest causes first
- Fill tube frozen at the mouth — First on this family because of where the tube runs: it passes through the coldest part of the channel, so a slow fill leaves a bead that grows into a plug.
- Supply shut-off partly closed or the line kinked behind the cabinet — Usually dates from a move or a floor clean. It produces small cubes before it produces none at all.
- Water filter clogged or not seated after a change — Ranks high because filter changes are the commonest recent event on any cabinet that suddenly stops making ice.
- Ice-maker module or control failed — Last, because everything above produces the same complaint for less money, and because a module swap on a guess is the classic wasted part on this appliance.
The diagnostic order for these models
- Trace the supply line behind the cabinet for a kink or a part-closed valve — Needs the cabinet pulled forward, which is why it sits below the checks that do not.
- Lift and release the bin arm or clear the sensor path — Free, instant, and it rules out the cause that makes a perfectly healthy maker sit idle.
- Compare cube size over a day — Small cubes that stay small mean a restricted fill, which sends the diagnosis to the supply side rather than to the module.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and read it after a few hours — A compartment that is not cold enough will never harvest, and this is the check that saves opening the mechanism for nothing.

Safety
Disconnect power at the plug before reaching past the rear panel. A fan blade that looks stopped is only stopped because the door is open, and it will spin as soon as the switch closes.
