The short answer
A BSBS cabinet that has turned noisy is worth diagnosing by timing rather than by tone: a noise that comes and goes with the compressor is a different fault from one that changes when the door opens. This page ranks the causes that way.
What you observe
- Clicking or a repeated tick every few minutes — A start relay or a defrost timer, and the interval is the clue.
- A buzz or rattle that stops when the door opens — Near-diagnostic: the circulation fan is switched by the door, so the noise is the fan or something touching it.
- A gurgle or trickle after the unit stops — Refrigerant settling. It is normal and needs nothing done about it.
- A bang or crack from inside the cabinet — Plastic liner expanding and contracting through a defrost cycle, which is normal on most cabinets.

Check in this order, and why
- Open the door and listen for the noise to stop — The circulation fan is switched by the door, so this splits the fault in one move.
- Note whether the noise is continuous, cyclic or a repeated tick — Continuous is a fan, cyclic is the compressor, a tick is a relay or timer.
- Check the unit is level and clear of the wall and cabinets — Costs nothing and explains a large share of noise complaints on this platform.
- Look behind the rear panel for frost touching the fan — Do this last, because it needs the cabinet emptied to see properly.
Before you open anything
Safety
Power off before opening anything, and clear ice by letting it melt. A blade against a cold surface punctures an evaporator and ends the appliance on the spot.
When to call a technician
Call once the unit is level, clear of its surroundings and the noise persists from inside, because a fan or a relay change on this family means a panel comes off with the cabinet live.
