The short answer
On the DDS models a refusal to start comes down to power, the door latch, the water supply or a delay setting still counting down. All four are owner-checkable, and all four come before anything behind a panel.
What you observe
- No lights, no sound, nothing at all — A supply fault rather than a machine fault. Nothing inside is worth suspecting until power is proven.
- The panel lights but the cycle never begins — Power is present and the machine is refusing. The door latch and the water supply are the first two suspects.
- It is counting down rather than refusing — A delay setting still running. It is the most common non-fault on any machine with a timer.
- It starts only if the door is pushed hard — A marginal latch or switch. That is a complete diagnosis without any further work.
Causes, most likely first
- The door latch or its switch — First on this family. The machine will not run without proof the door is shut, and a latch that has drifted out of alignment, or a rack pushed proud so the door does not pull fully home, gives a machine that appears dead while having full power.
- The control board, the touch panel or the wiring — Last, and the expensive end. Almost every start fault on this family resolves at the door, the socket or the tap before it reaches here.
- The outlet, the plug or the circuit feeding it — Second. A standard US household branch circuit is fifteen or twenty amps at one hundred and twenty volts, and a dishwasher sharing one with a disposer or a kettle can trip it without any fault in the machine.
- The supply tap closed or the inlet restricted — A machine that cannot fill will not begin. A tap closed after other work under the sink is a frequent and completely invisible cause.
Check in this order
- Check the breaker and what else shares that circuit — A machine that trips is not a start fault, and a shared circuit explains a machine that works sometimes.
- Note whether the panel lights at all — A dead panel and a lit one are two different halves of this list, and nothing separates them more cheaply.
- Isolate the machine for some minutes, then try a fresh cycle — Last of the free checks.
- Confirm the supply tap under the sink is fully open — A tap closed after other plumbing work is invisible and it stops a cycle before it begins.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A built-in machine is often fed from a socket inside an adjacent cabinet - find and isolate that socket before working, rather than assuming the machine is dead because it is silent.
