The short answer
On the DDS models a drainage failure is most often a filter full of debris, a hose that has been kinked or set wrongly, or a blocked air gap or waste connection. All three are reachable and all three come before the pump.
What you observe
- The pump can be heard running with nothing leaving — A blockage rather than an electrical fault. The pump has power and is working against something.
- Nothing audible at the drain step at all — Points past the filter at the pump or its supply, which is the other half of this list.
- Dirty water appears in the sink when the machine drains — A shared waste connection backing up. The machine is healthy and the restriction is in the plumbing.
- A stale smell from the base — Standing water and trapped debris. It arrives with a slow drain rather than a sudden failure.
Causes, most likely first
- A filter and sump packed with debris — First on this family and it is not close. Everything the load lets go ends here, the filter is designed to be opened by hand, and a machine that has never had it cleaned will eventually stop draining whatever else is healthy.
- A check valve held open or stuck shut — The small non-return in the drain path either lets water back or refuses to let it out. It is rarer than everything above and it sits deeper in the machine.
- A kinked or crushed drain hose — Second. The hose runs in a tight space behind or beside the machine, and pushing the unit home folds it.
- A failed drain pump or its supply — Last. Silence at the drain step rather than a straining pump is what actually points here, and it is behind the base panel either way.
Check in this order
- Pull the machine forward and follow the drain hose end to end — Look for a fold behind the cabinet and a crush point where the unit was pushed home.
- Start a drain and listen for the pump — Straining against a blockage and doing nothing at all are two different halves of this list, and this split is free.
- Rerun with the correct detergent dose and no added products — Removes suds from the list at no cost.
- Check the drain route rises before it falls — A missing high loop or air gap lets waste feed back, which looks exactly like a pump that cannot clear the machine.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never put a hand to a pump impeller on a machine that is still connected: a held cycle can restart the pump the moment power returns.
