The short answer
A DDS dishwasher that leaves food on the load has either lost spray coverage or lost water temperature. Establishing which costs nothing: look at what is dirty and where it sat in the rack, because the pattern of the failure names the cause.
What you observe
- Dishes are clean but come out wet — A drying rather than a cleaning fault, and often a rinse-aid or a temperature story.
- The upper rack cleans and the lower does not, or the reverse — One spray arm is not turning or is not getting water.
- Baked-on food that used to come off — Lost water temperature. The machine is washing but not at the heat the cycle assumes.
- A stale smell alongside poor results — Standing debris in the filter or the sump, which is also the cause of the poor results.
Causes, most likely first
- A filter or sump full of debris — First on this family. The wash water is recirculated, so a full filter means the machine spends the whole cycle washing with what it took off the last load.
- Rinse aid empty or set too low — Mostly a drying and spotting cause rather than a cleaning one, but it is what most film complaints turn out to be.
- Spray arm holes blocked, or an arm that cannot turn — Second. Seeds, labels and fragments block the small jets, and a tall item in the rack will stop an arm turning altogether.
- Restricted water inlet or a partly closed tap — Less water than the cycle expects means less pressure at the arms. It shows as uniformly weak cleaning rather than a pattern.
- The wash pump or its motor — Last, and the one cause here that is not owner work. It gives weak cleaning everywhere at once, with clean filters and free arms, which is exactly why those come first.
Check in this order
- Spin each spray arm by hand and hold it up to the light — Blocked jets are visible, and an arm that will not turn freely has either debris in its bearing or something in the rack stopping it.
- Look at what came out dirty and where it sat — A pattern points at an arm; an even result points at water, temperature or detergent.
- Check the detergent is fresh and the dispenser opens freely — A dispenser blocked by a tall item will hold its dose for the entire cycle.
- Reload with fewer, better-spaced items and run again — Separates loading from machine in one cycle without any tool.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Knives and skewers point down in the basket - reaching into a sump past an upright blade is how most dishwasher injuries happen.

When to call
Call when the filter is clean, both arms spin freely with clear jets, the load is well spaced, the water arrives hot and the results are still poor. At that point the cause is the wash pump or its motor, which is behind the base panel.
