The short answer

What you observe
- It starts only if the door is pushed hard — A marginal latch or switch. That is a complete diagnosis without any further work.

- It starts and pauses within seconds — A condition it needs is not there - water is the usual one, and that is checkable at the tap.
- It trips the breaker as soon as it is switched on — A short rather than a start fault, and the one symptom here that means stopping immediately.
Causes, most likely first
- The door latch or its switch — First on this family. The machine will not run without proof the door is shut, and a latch that has drifted out of alignment, or a rack pushed proud so the door does not pull fully home, gives a machine that appears dead while having full power.
- A pump or motor that cannot turn — Debris locking the pump gives a hum and a stop rather than a cycle. It is checkable once the filter is out and the machine is isolated.
- The outlet, the plug or the circuit feeding it — Second. A standard US household branch circuit is fifteen or twenty amps at one hundred and twenty volts, and a dishwasher sharing one with a disposer or a kettle can trip it without any fault in the machine.
- A control or motor that has cut out on heat — A machine that ran, stopped and will not restart until it has cooled is protecting itself. Letting it stand is a legitimate step.
Check in this order
- Isolate the machine for some minutes, then try a fresh cycle — Last of the free checks.
- Test the socket - on a built-in machine it is usually in the next cabinet — Second, and it is the check most often skipped because the socket is out of sight.
- Check for a delay setting or a control lock — It costs seconds and it is a real share of the calls on any machine with a timer.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bridge or hold a door switch to make a machine run: it is what stops the wash with the door open.
