The short answer
On the Black Decker BCRKD refrigerator a cabinet that runs but will not cool is usually a control that has stopped asking for cold rather than a cabinet that cannot make it. This page covers one BCRKD build, so the same handful of checks apply across the whole model list below and in the same order.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm and the compressor is plainly running — The hum is there, the sides feel warm near the coil, and the air inside is not cold.
- One compartment holds and the other does not — A freezer at or below 0 °F (−18 °C) over a fridge that will not reach 40 °F (4 °C) is the classic airflow split on these cabinets.
- The run never ends — The compressor cycles rarely or not at all and the cabinet still climbs.
- NEAR MISS — nothing runs and nothing is cold — Silence with no light and no fan is a supply, cord or start-device fault and belongs on the page for a unit that will not start.
Causes, most likely first on the BCRKD family
- The thermostat, its sensor or the setting itself — First on this family — this page covers one BCRKD build — and a knob or a touch panel that has been nudged, a sensor that has come away from its clip, or a control that has failed calling for nothing all look identical from the outside: a healthy cabinet that is simply not cold.
- Airflow blocked by frost or a stalled fan — Second, and the pair behind most of what gets blamed on the control: the cold is being made and is not arriving. The tell is the split between compartments, which a control fault rarely produces.
- Door seal, lighting and how long the door stands open — Third. A door left ajar by a jar on a shelf, or a lamp that stays on with the door shut, loads the cabinet continuously and looks for all the world like a control that will not settle.
- Compressor, start relay and the sealed system — Last, and the only group here that ends in a service call. A relay clicks in and out every few minutes; a failed compressor hums and stops; a leak runs continuously without ever getting the coil cold.
Check in this order, and why
- Read the setting and move it to the coldest position — First because it is free and because a control that has been moved explains the whole fault.
- Find the sensor and check it is still clipped where it belongs — Second: a sensor hanging in mid-air reports the cabinet as cold when it is not, and that is a five-minute find that saves a visit.
- Take both compartments and look for frost — Third, because a split between compartments overrides everything above: that is airflow, not control.
- Watch one full cycle with the door shut — Last.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The sealed system is not owner work: never cut, bend or puncture tubing, and never try to top up refrigerant.

When to call a technician
Call once the owner checks are clean, or straight away if the compressor clicks in and out every few minutes, if the coil never becomes warm anywhere along its length, or if you find oil around the tubing — oil outside the pipework means the system is open and every further hour of running makes the repair bigger. Call too if the cabinet will not hold food at 40 °F (4 °C) and you cannot restore that within a day: at that point the food, not the appliance, sets the deadline.
