The short answer
On the Black Decker BFLD dryer a drum that turns without heating is usually air that cannot move rather than heat that is not being made. The BFLD table lists one model, so the sequence below holds across the model list.
What you observe
- The drum turns normally and the load stays cold and damp — The motor side is healthy and the heat side is not — which already removes half of everything that can go wrong with a dryer.
- Some warmth, but nothing like enough — Partial heat points at restriction rather than at a dead element: the machine is making heat and not moving it through the load.
- The cycle runs its full time and the clothes are still wet — Either no heat at all, or moisture that has nowhere to go.
- NEAR MISS — the drum does not turn at all — That is a start, belt or motor fault, and the page for a dryer that will not start is the one you want.
Causes, most likely first on the BFLD family
- Lint path and the exhaust or condenser route — First on this family — the BFLD table lists one model — and a compact cabinet has a short, tight air path with very little tolerance: a packed filter, a crushed hose or a condenser choked with lint starves the element and cooks the cabinet instead of the clothes.
- Thermal protection that has opened because of that restriction — Second and consequent: the protection device does exactly what it is there to do and kills the heat while the drum keeps turning. Replacing it without clearing the restriction simply repeats the fault.
- The heating element itself — Third: a genuinely failed element gives no heat at all from the first minute, with a clean air path and a cabinet that stays cool. That combination is what distinguishes it from the two above.
- Thermostats, sensors and the supply — Last as a group. A machine fed by two legs of a heavy circuit can lose one and tumble without heat, which mimics an element failure exactly and is not a machine fault at all.
Check in this order, and why
- Clean the filter and check the air actually leaving — First because it is the top cause and free: a machine that cannot push air will never heat properly whatever else you change.
- Disconnect and inspect the exhaust route or the condenser — Second: the blockage is nearly always at the far end, at a bend, or in a hose crushed behind the cabinet.
- Feel the cabinet and the drum after a short run — Third — a hot cabinet with a cool load is restriction; a cool cabinet with a cool load is heat that is not being made.
- Check the breaker and the outlet last — Last of the free checks, and the one that explains a machine that tumbles happily and never warms.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Lint is fuel: never run the machine with the filter out, with the exhaust disconnected indoors, or with a blocked route, and clear the whole path rather than just the filter. A machine that trips its protection repeatedly must not simply be reset.

When to call a technician
Call when the air path is proven clear, the supply is proven good and the machine still will not heat: that is an element, a thermostat or a protection device, and all of them sit behind panels with live heavy-circuit wiring. Call immediately if there is a burning smell, scorching at the cabinet, or if the machine has tripped a breaker while heating.
