What this usually is
When a Bertazzoni RBM cabinet warms up but the compressor is audible, the cold side is working and the air side is not. On the RBM platform that means frost across the evaporator or a fan that has stopped turning, and only after both are cleared does refrigerant enter the picture.
What you observe on these models
- The run never ends — The compressor no longer cycles off, because the control never sees the setpoint reached.
- Condensation or soft ice cream in the freezer — The freezer is losing ground too, just more slowly than the fresh-food side. A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
- The cabinet is warm but the compressor is clearly running — You can hear it and feel warmth at the condenser, yet the air inside never gets cold.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — No hum, no fan, no light behind the controls means a supply, start-relay or main-board fault, and that is a different page.
Ranked causes on the RBM platform
- Frosted evaporator from a stalled defrost cycle — First on this family, and the reason the whole order is what it is. A defrost heater, thermostat or control that has gone quiet does not announce itself; the ice builds over weeks, airflow falls away gradually, and the owner notices warmth long before anyone notices frost.
- Evaporator fan motor stopped or dragging — Second because it produces the identical warm cabinet with none of the frost to show for it, and because on the RBM cabinet the fan is behind the same panel as the evaporator — one teardown answers both. A fan that starts and stalls when the door switch is bypassed counts here.
- Condenser coil blinded by dust or pet hair, or a stopped condenser fan — Third. It degrades capacity rather than removing it, so the cabinet drifts warm slowly and recovers badly after every door opening.
- Thermistor or control board reporting a temperature the cabinet does not have — Fourth. A sensor reading colder than reality tells the control to stop calling for cooling, and a board that has lost a defrost output produces cause one.
What to check first, second, third
- 1. Open the freezer and listen for the evaporator fan — Hold the door switch closed by hand.
- 2. Look at the freezer rear panel for frost — If the fan runs and there is a frost sheet, the defrost system is your fault.
- 3. Pull the unit out and check the condenser coil and its fan — Dust-blinded coils and a stalled condenser fan are both visible without a meter, and both are cheap.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The freezer rear panel on this family sits over the evaporator fan and often over a defrost heater, so treat both as live until the plug is out of the wall, and never hold the door switch closed with tape while your hands are inside the compartment.

Where the owner side ends
The line on the RBM cabinet falls where a meter becomes necessary. Listening for the fan, looking for frost and cleaning a condenser coil are owner work. Reading a thermistor against a resistance table, confirming a defrost heater has continuity, or deciding whether a board has lost an output are not, and neither is anything on the sealed side.
