The short version
A LRD refrigerator that leaks is usually failing to move meltwater rather than failing to hold pressure. The defrost drain, the drain pan and the door seal produce the puddles; the water line produces the rarer and more urgent ones.
The observable signs on this platform
- Ice building in a sheet on the freezer floor — Meltwater that refroze where it stood because the drain would not take it. Chipping it away without clearing the drain buys a week.
- Condensation or frost on the inner door face — Warm room air is reaching the liner past a seal that has taken a set.
- A steady wet patch behind the cabinet that does not dry — Supply-line or drain-pan territory. Unlike the others, this one continues when the compressor is off.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is also running warm — A leak alongside a warm cabinet usually means the evaporator has iced over and is shedding, which is a cooling fault first.
Causes, most likely first on the LRD family
- Defrost drain blocked by ice or debris — Far and away the leading cause. Every defrost cycle produces water that has to travel from the evaporator trough to a pan at the back, and the inlet of that route is the coldest point on it.
- Drain pan cracked, displaced or overflowing — Second, and invisible from the front. The pan depends on compressor heat to evaporate what the drain sends it; knocked off its seat during earlier work, or split with age, it puts that water on the floor instead.
- Door seal deformed or a door not closing square — Third by volume and underrated as a cause. Warm humid air on a cold liner condenses continuously, and that condensate both runs and overloads the defrost system — which is how a seal problem becomes a drain problem.
- Ice maker or dispenser fill line, valve or fitting — Fourth in frequency, first in urgency. It is the only cause here that keeps delivering water when the appliance is switched off, and the only one that can damage a floor faster than it damages the appliance.
The order to work in, and the reason for it
- 1. Establish where the water starts — Dry everything, put paper at the front edge and behind the cabinet, and give it a day.
- 2. Clear the defrost trough at the back of the freezer floor — Warm water, poured slowly, nothing metal.
- 3. Pull the cabinet and inspect the pan — Damp is right; full or askew is not.
Safety first
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and electricity are the hazard here rather than the appliance itself: dry the floor before you kneel on it, and if water has reached a receptacle or an extension lead, switch the circuit off at the panel before touching anything.

When to call a technician
On the LRD cabinet the line falls at the evaporator cover. Pouring warm water down a drain trough, reseating a drain pan and testing a door seal with a sheet of paper are all owner work and between them close most of these calls. Anything behind the evaporator cover, any supply fitting you are not confident re-making, and any leak that persists with the power off should go to a technician — and shut the water off at the line before you make that call rather than after.
