The short answer
On the BTL line, the most common reason a washer is not starting is water supply closed or inlet screens blocked. What you see on the BTL line
- Nothing at all when start is pressed — No lights, no lock click, no water. The machine reads as unplugged.
- The panel lights but the cycle never begins — Control power is there and something downstream is refusing — usually the door lock or the water supply.
- A click from the door and then silence — The lock is engaging and the cycle still will not run, which moves the fault past the door.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and quits part-way — A cycle that begins and stops belongs on the cycle-fault page.
Causes, most likely first on the BTL line
- Water supply closed or inlet screens blocked — Most machines will not proceed until they detect a fill. A closed tap, a kinked hose or a silted inlet screen leaves the cycle sitting at its first step with nothing happening. It sits near the top because it is the commonest cause of a cycle that appears to start and then does nothing at all. Two models sit under this family key. They are close enough relatives that a fault found on one is worth suspecting on the others.
- Drum jammed by a trapped item — A wire, a coin or an underwire that has worked between the drum and the outer tub can stop the drum turning. The machine tries, fails, and may give up before it does anything visible. It is on the list because turning the drum by hand takes seconds and rules out a whole class of misdiagnosis.
- Door lock or lid switch not proving — A washer will not begin until it is told the door or lid is shut and locked. That interlock is mechanical, it is operated every cycle, and it is the part that most often stops a healthy machine dead. It leads because the interlock is the only part in the start chain that moves on every cycle, and moving parts fail first.
- Control board or user interface — This is the diagnosis of exclusion on a modern washer: everything else has to be cleared before it is a fair conclusion. It ranks below the mechanical causes because it is genuinely less common, and because a board is what gets replaced when nobody checked the lock.
Check in this order, and why
- First: Check both taps are fully open and the hoses are not kinked — Close the tap, unscrew the hose at the machine and check the small screen in the inlet for grit. It comes first because it is the cheapest of the four to exclude and because everything below it is harder to read while it is unresolved.
- Second: Turn the drum by hand with the power off — Rotate it a full turn in both directions rather than a quarter turn.
- Third: Close the door firmly and listen for the lock to engage — No click, or a click that does not hold, names the lock.
- Last: Do the panel lights respond normally to every button? — Dead or erratic buttons point at the interface rather than the lock.
Before you open anything
Safety
Switch off at the breaker before any panel comes off, and treat the capacitor as charged afterwards. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A at 120 V, and the connections behind a washer sit next to water, so dry everything before you start. Close the taps before unscrewing any hose, and expect the hose to hold a litre or so when it comes off.

When to call a technician
The line falls at the meter: taps, hoses, the outlet, the lock click and a hand-turned drum are all owner checks, and nothing beyond them is. A machine that locks and fills and then refuses to turn is already past the owner side of this list.
