The short answer

What you observe
- A sheet of ice under the lowest freezer basket — The drain at the base of the freezer column has frozen and meltwater is refreezing.
- A freezer basket or drawer that no longer closes — Ice under it is holding it open, which admits more air and makes more ice.
- Water running out under the freezer door onto the floor — The same blockage once the ice has filled the space available.
- Water on the floor behind the cabinet — The drain tube or the evaporation tray - or a supply fitting, if a water line is present.
- NEAR MISS - water everywhere and the cabinet is warm — A cabinet that has stopped cooling is thawing; the cooling page comes first.

- Empty the lowest basket and look at the freezer floor — Second. Ice sheeting there is the drain, and it is the leading cause.
- Thaw the drain with warm water poured slowly — Third, with the cabinet unplugged, repeating rather than probing.
- Look behind the cabinet for a water line before blaming the tube — Fourth, because on this format a supply fitting is a real possibility.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If a water line is present, shut it off at the valve before touching any fitting. Mop before working, and never clear a frozen drain with a metal probe.
