The short answer
A new noise from the USBSR line is usually either a fan meeting ice or the cabinet passing normal vibration into the furniture around it. Both are identified by where the sound is rather than by what it sounds like, and both are checked without tools. The compressor, which is what owners usually suspect, is the least likely of the three. With this many numbers under one name, the diagnosis carries across all of them and the parts do not — read your own number off the machine before you order.
What you observe on these models
- A vibration that changes when you press on the cabinet — The appliance is not level or is touching the units beside it, and normal running vibration is being amplified by the furniture.
- Ticking and popping every few hours — Liner expansion and defrost meltwater reaching a warm heater — periodic, harmless, and often reported after a move to a quieter room.
- A knock at the instant the compressor starts — Hardened mounts rather than a failing compressor; the cooling is unaffected.
- A hum that has become a drone over a year or two — Mounts again, or a cabinet that has shifted so that it now touches something it did not before.
- NEAR MISS — noise together with a cabinet that is warming — Then the noise is a symptom of the cooling fault, and that is the page to work first.
Causes, most likely first on the USBSR line
- Fan blade meeting ice inside the cabinet — The leading cause on this platform. The fan runs in the coldest part of the appliance, so it is the only moving part that frost can grow into.
- Condenser fan obstructed or worn — Close behind it. Debris in the blade path rattles; a worn bearing whirrs and rises in pitch as it warms.
- Cabinet not level or touching the cabinetry — Third in order, and the one most often missed. It ranks high because it costs nothing and because it is very often the whole answer.
Check in this order, and why
- Listen inside the cabinet and note whether the sound is growing — A noise that has worsened over weeks is ice reaching the fan. A manual defrost that silences it confirms both the noise and the underlying defrost problem.
- Unplug the appliance and inspect the fan at the back — Turn the blade by hand and clear anything in its path. Most condenser noise is debris rather than a failed motor.
- Press a hand firmly on the top of the cabinet — If the note changes, the noise is being transmitted into the furniture. Adjust the feet until the appliance stands solid and touches nothing.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off an evaporator with a metal tool: the tubing behind it is soft, and puncturing it ends the appliance rather than the fault.

When to call a technician
A noise that does not affect cooling is rarely urgent on the USBSR line, and the free checks are worth doing before anything is spent. The service line starts at the evaporator cover and at any part that has to be replaced rather than cleaned. If the noise and a temperature problem started together, treat the temperature as the fault and the noise as the clue.
