The short answer
Water around a VFR cabinet is almost always ice that has melted somewhere it was not meant to, not a burst pipe. An upright sheds its defrost ice as sheets, faster than any drain was designed to take. That makes this one of the better faults to work through at home, provided you establish where the water starts before you move the cabinet. There is one number under the VFR label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- A sheet of water arriving at once rather than a trickle — Manual defrost releases its ice in slabs.
- Water arrives all at once rather than as a trickle — Ice letting go in a sheet, which is the platform behaving as designed.
- Frost concentrated at one point on the seal — That corner is where the humid air is getting in.
- Water appeared after a power cut — Thaw and refreeze, not a fault.
- NEAR MISS — water appears only after a long power cut — That is the load thawing, not a leak.
Causes, most likely first on the VFR family
- Defrost meltwater beating the channel and the drain — First on this platform: on a manual-defrost upright the ice lets go as sheets and arrives faster than the drain can take it.
- A blocked drain hole or channel at the back of the cabinet floor — Second: freezer debris plugs it, and then the water runs forward under the bottom basket.
- The lid gasket letting warm damp air in — Third: warm air reaching a freezing surface leaves water as well as frost.
- The drip tray on the compressor, full or knocked off its lugs — Fourth: it carries the water from both compartments.
- Levelling, front to back — Last: tip the cabinet forward and the water leaves at the door instead of at the drain, which is the whole of the fault on a surprising number of calls.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Ask when the water appears — All at once after a defrost is the platform working as designed; daily and steady is a drain or a seal.
- Clear the drain hole and channel with warm water — Never a wire: a punctured liner ends the cabinet.
- Level the cabinet front to back — The drain path is designed around it.
- Dry the cabinet shell and watch it for a day — If the shell re-wets with the interior dry, you are looking at condensation from the room.
- Find out whether the water is inside the box or under it — Inside is defrost water; under, with a dry interior, is condensation on the shell.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Treat that as the first step of every check below that involves a panel, a grille or a cover.

When to call a technician
Clearing a drain, closing a plug, levelling a cabinet and fitting a gasket are all owner jobs on a upright freezer. On these models the line falls at the sealed refrigerant circuit and the compressor. Call without working through anything at all for a cabinet that has stopped holding despite a clean seal and a clear frost line.
