The short answer
A FLD dryer that is completely dead is usually unpowered, unlatched or protected rather than broken. A cabinet installation hides the supply, which is why power is checked first and carefully. Work from the supply inwards and four of the five causes need no tools. There is one number under the FLD label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- Nothing at all after the machine was pushed back into its cabinet — The cord or the socket behind it.
- Dead since other work was done in the room — A switched-off spur or a tripped circuit, not the machine.
- It worked this morning and not this afternoon — Sudden and total points outside the machine before it points inside.
- The washer beside it is also dead — One circuit, one fault, and it is not this appliance.

Causes, most likely first on the FLD family
- Power at the socket or the spur feeding it — First on this platform: a compact installed in a cabinet is usually fed from a socket you cannot see.
- Door latch and door switch — Second: front-load doors are heavy and the catch wears.
- A residual-current device tripped by another appliance — Third: laundry circuits trip as a group, so a dead dryer is sometimes a tripped circuit with a fault in the washer beside it.
- A child lock or control lock set on the panel — Fourth: it is designed to make the machine ignore the panel completely, which is exactly what a dead machine looks like.
- A motor that hums but cannot turn — Last: that is not a no-start in the electrical sense: it is a seized drum or a jammed blower, and continuing to press start does damage.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Prove the socket or spur that feeds it — A cabinet installation hides the supply.
- Close the door and listen for the catch — Heavy doors, worn catches.
- Move the cycle selector off its current position and back — A machine sitting at the end of a programme ignores start until it is reset.
- Look for a lock symbol and hold the marked button — A control lock makes the machine ignore every press.
- If it hums without turning, switch it off and stop — That is a seized drum or blower, and repeated attempts damage the motor.

When to call a technician
Sockets, breakers, doors, locks and cycle selection are yours on a front-load dryer. On these models the line falls at anything inside the cabinet, on a machine that is live while it runs. Call without working through anything at all for a machine that stops and restarts on every load, because a protection device is doing the work.
