The short answer

Causes, most likely first on the AVDWEH family
- Loading, and the spray arm it shadows — First on this platform: a tall item in the wrong slot stops the lower arm turning, and a machine whose arm cannot turn washes one quarter of the load properly. Spin the arm by hand with the racks loaded: if it stops anywhere, you have found the fault.

- Flow through the faucet coupler — Last: a tap opened halfway, an aerator screen clogged behind the coupler, or a coupler not fully seated all give a short fill, and a short fill washes badly without ever reporting an error.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Load the machine, then spin both spray arms by hand — If an arm stops against anything, that is your fault and you have found it in ten seconds.
- Take the arms off and look through the jets at a light — Blocked holes are obvious from the inside and impossible to see from the outside.
- Pull the filter, rinse it and check the sump below it — Do this before anything mechanical: it is free and it is the commonest cause.
- Run the hot tap at the sink until it runs hot, then start the machine — It gives the first fill hot water instead of the pipeful of cold standing in the line.
- Change detergent and add rinse aid for one week — Only after the checks above, because it is the slowest test on the list.
