The short answer
The Artic Chef BCD refrigerator family covers a single listing in the roster below, and on that platform the first split is whether both compartments are warm or only one. A cabinet that has gone warm while the machine is plainly running is telling you that cold is being made and not delivered, which is a different fault from cold not being made at all. Airflow, the door and the condenser account for most of it; the compressor is blamed far more often than it fails.
The observables
- Both compartments are warm and the machine is running continuously — Either the air path is blocked at the source or the system is no longer moving heat.
- The condenser coil or the grille at the bottom is packed with dust — Heat has to leave the machine somewhere. A blanketed coil raises head pressure, runs the compressor hot and shows up first as a cabinet that has quietly lost a few degrees.
- No sound at all from inside the freezer with the door held open — The evaporator fan should run with the door switch pressed. Silence there, with the compressor plainly running, is a fan or a switch and both are reachable.
- Water pooling under the crisper drawers as well as a warm cabinet — Melt from a stalled defrost has to go somewhere. Water inside the cabinet alongside the warmth points firmly at the defrost path rather than at anything else on the list.
- NEAR MISS — the freezer is too cold and the fridge is too warm — That pairing usually means the damper or the air split between compartments rather than a cooling failure, and it is worth ruling in before anything else is suspected.
Causes, most likely first on the BCD line
- Airflow blocked by frost on the evaporator — Ranked first here, because the coil ices in normal use and depends on a cycle running properly to clear it, so a cycle that is merely late rather than absent will close the air path over weeks without any warning. This label covers one listing, so there is no variant to rule out first and the order below goes straight at the fault.
- Evaporator fan not running — Second here, because it is the only part in the cold half of the machine that has to keep turning, and when it stops the cabinet keeps making cold and stops delivering any of it.
- Cabinet packed so the rear air outlets are blocked — Third here, because it is an arrangement problem rather than a fault, it costs nothing to put right, and it produces a warm compartment on a machine where every part is working exactly as designed.
- Defrost heater, sensor or control no longer completing the cycle — Fourth here, because it sits behind the frost it causes: the frost is the symptom you can see, and which of the three parts failed is the part of the diagnosis that needs a meter and the panel off.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last here, because it is the least common of these and the only one that is not an owner fix at any stage; refrigerant work is licensed work and the tools to do it are not owner tools.
What to check first, second, third
- Compare the two compartments before anything else — A hard-frozen freezer with a warm fresh-food side is an air-path fault. Both warm is a source fault.
- Clear the rear air outlets and rearrange the contents — Pull food back from the vents at the rear of both compartments and re-seat the drawers.
- Feel the condenser tubing for heat with the compressor running — Warm tubing means the compressor is pumping and the system has charge; tubing at room temperature while the compressor hums is the one reading that points at the sealed system.
Safety first
Safety
The machine stays plugged in for the listening and the looking. It comes off supply — plug out, or breaker off — before any cover is disturbed, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator is top-heavy with its doors open and it rolls unpredictably on a hard floor, so empty the doors and walk it out with a second pair of hands. Hands stay out of the machine compartment while it is plugged in, because the lower fan starts whenever the compressor calls and there is no interlock on it..
Models in the BCD family — Written for the whole roster above rather than for one listing; a page written for a single model would go further than this one does. Model numbers come from the platform data and are reproduced unchanged.

When this stops being an owner job
Call immediately if the condenser tubing stays at room temperature while the compressor is plainly running, or if there is oil anywhere on the tubing: that is a sealed-system diagnosis and it is not an owner repair at any stage. A cabinet that is a few degrees warm can wait a day if the food is moved; one that is at room temperature cannot, and neither can a freezer full of food.
