The short answer

What the cabinet is doing
- A clatter for a few seconds at the start of a run — Usually the condenser fan blade catching lint or a piece of packing that has worked its way into the machine compartment.

- A rattle only when something is sitting on top of the unit — The cheapest finding on this page, and one of the most common. Clear the top and listen again before going further.

Ranked causes
- Ice or debris contacting the evaporator fan blade — First here. The fan is inside the cold compartment, so any frost that escapes the coil area ends up in the blade path. The give-away is a noise that stops the moment the freezer door is opened and the fan is switched off.
- Cabinet not level or loaded against a wall — Ranked above the machine-compartment causes here because it costs nothing to check and it explains a large share of noise calls that turn out to have no failed part at all.
- Hardened compressor mounting grommets — This is the cause that explains a deepened hum with no other symptom at all. Cooling is unaffected, and on this roster it is not a reason to replace anything.
- Compressor or sealed-system fault — Bottom of the list on this roster, and the only entry that is not an owner check. Sealed-system work is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools.
- Body: This order differs from the brand-generic one in a single place: levelling and loading move above the condenser fan. On the ABMC roster the machine compartment is closed enough that lint takes years to matter, while a rocking cabinet makes noise on day one.
The order to work in
- Open the freezer door and listen — The freezer fan is switched by the door. If the noise stops, it is freezer-side and you have halved the problem for free.
- Clear the top and sides of the cabinet — Remove anything resting on the unit and pull it clear of adjacent cabinets, then listen again before going further.
- Stand at the back and listen low — Machine-compartment noise is loudest at floor level behind the unit and does not change when a door is opened.
- Body: This order exists because of where the ABMC listings put things. The door-switched fan gives you a free test, so it goes first; the machine compartment needs the unit pulled out, so it goes later.

Switch the unit off at its breaker or unplug it before any panel comes off; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you have to move the cabinet to reach the back, empty the doors first, protect the floor, and get help rather than walking it on its corners.
