Whirlpool and its family lead on dependability and cheap parts, while premium built-ins from Sub-Zero deliver excellent longevity at a high repair cost. Washers and dryers#

Laundry rewards durability, and two brands stand out. Recognizing these families helps you predict reliability: a lesser-known brand built by a major parent often inherits that parent's parts availability and durability, while an orphaned import with no ecosystem behind it is the riskier bet regardless of its spec sheet.

Weight documented repair rates and parts availability over glossy ratings, and be skeptical of any brand whose reputation rests on smart features rather than a mechanical track record. The most reliable choice is usually the least exciting one on the showroom floor.

What actually drives reliability in 2026#

The single biggest shift is from mechanical to electronic failure. Modern appliances' core mechanical systems — motors, compressors, pumps — are more reliable than their 1990s equivalents thanks to better materials and tighter manufacturing, so the old "they do not build them like they used to" complaint is only half right. What has changed is that more electronics mean more electronic failures, which is why the brands piling on smart features and touchscreens tend to rank lower.
