The short answer
Standing water in the bottom of a BGXDW dishwasher is nearly always a blockage in a short and accessible path: the filter, the sump, the drain hose, or the air gap and waste connection under the sink. On this build check the base tray as well — water there raises the float and stops the machine from doing anything about the water in the tub.
What you observe
- Water stands in the sump at the end of every cycle — A small amount is normal on many machines. A covered filter is not, and that is the line.
- The pump runs and the water does not move — Power reaching a blocked path. It is a blockage rather than a failure and it is usually reachable.
- It drains slowly and leaves a film behind — Partial restriction, most often a filter that is overdue or a hose with a low point holding water.
- The sink backs up when the dishwasher drains — The shared waste connection is blocked. The dishwasher is working correctly and the plumbing is not.
- NEAR MISS — water is on the floor rather than in the tub — That is a leak, it can reach an outlet, and it should be dealt with before anything on this page.
Causes, most likely first on the BGXDW models
- The filter and sump are blocked — Ranked first: it is the designed collection point, it is intended to be cleaned by the owner, and it accounts for most standing-water complaints on its own.
- The waste connection, air gap or disposer stub is blocked — Second, and the cause people least expect because it is not in the appliance. A sink that backs up when the machine drains identifies it instantly.
- The drain hose is kinked or has a trapped low point — Third: a hose crushed behind the cabinet, or one that lost its high loop when the machine was pushed back into place.
- The drain pump has failed or is obstructed — Last: less common than the three above, and distinguishable because a blocked pump strains while a failed one is silent.
Check in this order, and why
- Bail the standing water and remove the filter — First: it is the most likely cause, it needs no tools, and it is designed for owner access.
- Check the sump and the impeller area for debris — Second: glass, labels and seeds get past a filter that is not seated properly and lodge exactly here.
- Run the sink and watch for a backup — Third: if the sink backs up, the shared waste is the fault and nothing in the dishwasher needs touching.
- Check the air gap and the drain-hose routing — Last of the owner checks: an air gap fills with debris and a lost high loop stops the flow.
Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the dishwasher off at its spur or breaker before reaching into the sump or removing the kickplate — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Assume broken glass in any sump you cannot see the bottom of and wear gloves. Dry the floor before working near the cabinet.
When to call a technician
Call when the filter and sump are clean, the sink drains freely, the air gap is clear and the hose is correctly routed, and the machine still will not empty. On a BGXDW dishwasher that leaves the drain pump or the control that runs it, both under power inside a wet cabinet. Call sooner if the pump is silent at the drain step, or if clearing the waste connection is beyond reach.
