Check in this order, and why this family dictates it

- Look at the rear panel of the cold compartment for a frost sheet — A sheet rather than a light dusting confirms the airflow story and tells you the defrost side is the fault.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points around the seal — Done third because it explains the ice rather than replacing the diagnosis, and it is the cheapest thing on the list to put right.
- Feel the condenser and the side walls for heat — Only worth doing once the three above are clean; warmth here says the system is still pumping and pushes the sealed-system cause further down, not up.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor circuit on a cabinet this size is live at the relay even when the machine looks idle. If the cabinet has been off for a while, remember that a refrigerator holds food safely at 40 degrees F (4 degrees C) or below, and food above that for hours should be discarded rather than re-chilled.

When to call a technician
