An Amana ASI that runs without getting cold is almost never out of refrigerant. The matrix on this page is the definitive list for this family: five model numbers. The cold is being made and not delivered, so this page works the delivery path — defrost, fans, coils, damper — before it goes anywhere near the sealed system.
Symptoms on these models
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — The compressor hum is there and the cabinet light works; the air inside is simply not cold.
- A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall — Thick, uneven ice across the back panel rather than the fine even coat a healthy cabinet carries.
- The back of the unit is unusually hot to the hand — The machine compartment radiates more heat than usual into the room, which is heat that should have gone out through the coil.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power, start-relay or compressor fault and it is a different page; this one assumes the unit runs.
What it usually is, in order
- Stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — First here because the matrix on this page spans enough models to cross more than one production run — a defrost heater or timer that is half-working still passes a casual inspection, and the frost slab it leaves is the most common single cause of this symptom.
- Evaporator fan motor failure — Second, and it is the cause most often mistaken for the first: no air moves, the cabinet warms, but the evaporator stays clean because nothing has stopped the defrost cycle.
- Condenser coil or condenser fan choked — Third: dust and pet hair blanket the coil, the unit cannot reject heat, and cooling falls off gradually. It is the cause that tracks how the appliance is installed rather than which model you own.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Fourth and last because refrigerant is not consumed. A genuine sealed-system fault means a leak or a mechanical failure, both of which are rarer than the three causes above and neither of which is diagnosed without gauges.
Check in this order, and why
- Hold the freezer door switch closed and listen — A fan you can hear removes one of the two likeliest causes immediately, and it needs nothing but a hand.
- Look for a frost slab on the freezer rear panel — If the fan runs and the rear wall is iced over, the defrost circuit is the fault and the airflow is a symptom of it.
- Feel the condenser area for trapped heat and lint — Only worth doing once the two above are clean, because a choked coil degrades cooling slowly rather than killing it.
- Check the temperature the cabinet actually holds — Put a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf overnight; a reading that never falls tells a technician far more than a control display does.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not defeat or tape the door switch to keep the fan running while you work, and do not thaw an iced evaporator with a heat gun or a knife — the tubing behind that ice punctures easily, and a punctured sealed system turns a small repair into a replacement.

The service-call line
The condition is simple on these models: if the fix needs the freezer emptied and the rear panel off, or any work on the refrigerant circuit, it is a service call. A frost slab you can see, a fan you cannot hear, or a coil you can vacuum are owner territory. Oil at the compressor, a burning smell, or a breaker that trips are reasons to stop and call the same day.
