The short answer
On the Amana A refrigerator family, an ice maker that has stopped filling the bucket points at the supply and the bucket, because between them they cover the two ways a healthy maker produces nothing at all. The brand-generic article puts the ice maker module itself at the top of this symptom. It does not lead here, and on these models it is not what the first three checks are looking for.
What you observe on these models
- Cubes come out thin, hollow or half formed — A short fill rather than a failed harvest, which points at water rather than at the module.
- Ice has welded into one block in the bucket — A maker with nowhere to put its output looks exactly like a maker that has stopped.
- A sheet of ice under the bucket rather than cubes in it — Fill water is missing the mould, usually because the tube is partly frozen.
- NEAR MISS — the freezer itself is not properly cold — Then the cooling page comes first and the ice is a symptom of it.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Low water pressure at the valve, or a clogged filter — Top of the list on these models. The maker fills on a timed valve opening rather than to a level, so anything that slows the water gives a short fill. The result is thin crescents and a bucket that never fills.
- Ice bucket jammed, or the auger seized in a block — Second. Ice that has partly melted and refrozen welds into a block that the auger cannot turn. The maker may be making ice perfectly well and simply have nowhere to put it.
- Fill tube frozen shut — Third on this platform. One overshooting fill leaves a plug of ice in the tube, and every fill after that misses the mould entirely. Nothing has failed electrically, which is why the module often gets replaced for nothing.
- Shutoff arm or ice-level sensor holding the maker off — Fourth, and the one to rule in only when the others are clean. A bail arm nudged up by a bag of frozen food, or a beam sensor blocked by frost, tells the maker the bucket is full. It is the fastest thing on this list to check and the most often missed.
Check in this order, and why
- Fill a cup at the dispenser if the cabinet has one, or watch a fill — Start here. A slow or hesitant flow is a supply problem, and it explains thin ice without any part being faulty.
- Lift the bucket out and look at the ice in it — Then this. A welded block means the maker has nowhere to put its output, which is a different fault entirely.
- Look at the fill tube where it enters the mould — Third. A plug of ice there explains everything downstream and is cleared rather than replaced.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.

When to call a technician
Call once the supply, the shutoff arm, the bucket and the freezer temperature are all proven good, because what is left is the module or the valve.
