A leaking XS unit is telling you where its meltwater is going, not that it is broken. When the water appears after the unit has been off or opened for a while, look at what the cold plate was holding rather than at the drain, so the ranking below departs from the brand-generic order.
The observables
- Standing water on the compartment floor — Enough to see, sitting in the channel rather than spread across the base.
- Water only after the unit has been open or switched off — Nothing during normal running, then a puddle after a stop.
- A damp patch under the machinery end — Spread rather than pooled, and it dries and returns on its own rhythm.
- NEAR MISS - water only once, right after a move — A unit laid down or carried warm sheds what it was holding. One puddle after a move is not a fault; a second one is.
Causes, most likely first on this line
- A frost sheet releasing its water at once — Ranked first on this line: a plate that has built a sheet of frost holds a surprising amount of water, and it releases all of it the moment the compressor stops for long enough. The drain is sized for a trickle, not for that, so the surplus goes over the lip.
- A humid room and frequent opening — It belongs in the ranking because it changes what the other causes do: a marginal drain copes in a dry room and fails in a wet one.
- A blocked condensate drain path — Then: everything the plate sheds has to leave through one small outlet. Once that outlet is even partly restricted the trough holds water between cycles, and the first time the cabinet is tilted or opened it runs out over the lip.
- A split drain hose or a failed seam — Last, and the reason the order matters: once the simple causes are excluded, what is left is a route the water should not have: a hose that has hardened and split, or a seam that has opened. This is the least common cause and the only one on this list that is not owner work.
The order to work in
- Look at the cold plate for a frost sheet — Look for a sheet rather than the light dusting a working cabinet carries. A sheet means the water arriving at the drain is far more than the drain can take at once.
- Account for the room and the routine — Look for condensation on windows or walls nearby. A room that sweats will make any cold cabinet sweat too.
- Clear and test the compartment drain — Empty the compartment, find the outlet in the floor, and pour a little warm water at it. If it stands rather than draining, that is the fault and nothing further needs checking.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Isolate the unit at the plug or the breaker before any panel comes off - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Mop the floor first: standing water underneath a cabinet you are about to tip or move is how this job hurts people.

When this stops being owner work
Call once the drain has been proven clear, the cabinet proven level and the compartment emptied, and the water is still arriving: what remains is behind a panel. Call straight away if the water is anywhere near the machinery end, if a breaker trips, or if the cabinet is warm as well as wet.
