The short answer
A new noise on the X line is usually a mounting or contact problem rather than a failing part: the cheapest explanation is almost always the load rather than the machine. Most of what follows can be tested in minutes without a tool. The first check on this line is the simplest one - run the unit empty for a minute - and the cause at the bottom of the list is the only one that is not owner work.
What the owner actually sees
- A hard knock at the start of each run — One thump as the compressor picks up, then a steady hum; often another at the stop.
- A rattle that comes and goes within a run — It appears for a few seconds at a particular point and then clears on its own.
- A continuous whine while air is moving — It tracks the fan rather than the compressor and stops when the fan does.

What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Contents and baskets vibrating — First here, and by a wide margin: this is the cause that survives every repair attempt, because nobody empties the cabinet before listening. Take everything out, and half of these complaints stop.
- Normal refrigerant and expansion sounds — Second on this line: gurgling, trickling, a soft hiss after a stop and an occasional tick from the cabinet as it changes temperature are all ordinary. Owners new to a compressor unit report every one of them as a fault.
- The cabinet not standing squarely — Third: stance is first because it is free to test and it explains the loudest complaints: the noise changes the moment the unit is shifted a hand-width.
- A worn fan bearing — Last on the list, and the only one here that is not owner work: it develops rather than appearing, gets worse in the cold, and is often quieter for a while after a run, which is how it is distinguished from a foul.
Working order, and the reason for it
- Run the unit empty for a minute — Take everything out, close the door and listen. If the noise has gone, it was load, not machinery, and the fix is how the cabinet is packed.
- Separate ordinary sounds from the complaint — Ask whether the sound is new or newly noticed. A unit moved into a quiet room has not changed; the background has.
- Press each corner in turn — Press down on each corner of the top. Any corner that moves is the one making the noise, and packing it out is the whole repair.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A fan can start without warning while the unit is live, so never reach into a machinery bay to feel for a noise on a running unit.
