When a QX unit stops cooling, the useful split is whether it makes no cold at all or makes cold it cannot distribute. Short runs repeated all day mean something is cutting the run short, and both usual triggers are free to test, and that distinction decides everything that follows. The first check on this line is the simplest one - time the runs and the gaps - and the cause at the bottom of the list is the only one that is not owner work.
The observables
- It was fine until the weather turned — The same unit in the same place, coping in spring and failing in a hot room.
- A sheet of ice on the cold plate — Frost thick enough to feel as a layer, with the cabinet warm despite it.
- It recovers overnight and fails again by afternoon — A pattern that follows the room rather than the machine.
- NEAR MISS - cold enough but noisy — Noise with normal temperatures is a mounting or contact problem, not a cooling problem, and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on this line
- Protection cutting the run short — First here, and by a wide margin: treating this as a compressor fault wastes the visit, because the compressor is doing what it was designed to do under bad conditions.
- The condenser unable to shed heat — Second on this line: a condenser boxed in, dusty or pressed against a wall cannot give up heat, so the compressor runs and runs and the cabinet never reaches temperature. The unit looks healthy and performs like a broken one.
- A marginal supply or lead — Third: a compressor draws its heaviest current at the moment it starts, and a supply that sags under that load leaves the unit clicking or running without ever pulling down. The cabinet stays warm while everything looks alive.
- A loss of refrigerant charge — Last on the list, and the only one here that is not owner work: it is diagnosed by exclusion and by what the machinery end is doing, never by guesswork, and the work itself is licensed work.
The order to work in
- Time the runs and the gaps — Time a few cycles. Runs of a few minutes with short gaps, repeated all day, is protection tripping rather than normal cycling.
- Give the condenser air and a clean grille — Feel the machinery end while it runs: it should be warm. A unit running continuously with a cool condenser has a different problem from one running continuously with a hot one.
- Prove the supply before anything else — Run the unit from a different socket on a different circuit, using its own lead and no adaptor. A unit that cools normally there had a supply problem, not a fault.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not defeat a door switch to keep the cabinet running with the door open while you test; use a thermometer instead.

When this stops being owner work
Two conditions end the owner checks here: a cabinet that will not come down with the condenser clear, the door sealing and the setpoint proven, and any sign of oil or damage at the machinery end. The second is urgent rather than routine.
