A leaking NLD unit is telling you where its meltwater is going, not that it is broken. A leak that began right after a clean points at what was removed and not fully replaced, so the ranking below departs from the brand-generic order.
The observables
- A damp patch under the machinery end — Spread rather than pooled, and it dries and returns on its own rhythm.
- Beads of water on the outside panels — The outer skin is cold enough to sweat in the room it stands in.
- Contents at the base sitting in water — Labels soften and packaging swells while everything higher up is dry.
- NEAR MISS - water only once, right after a move — A unit laid down or carried warm sheds what it was holding. One puddle after a move is not a fault; a second one is.
Causes, most likely first on this line
- An unseated drain plug or grommet — Ranked first on this line: where a line uses a removable plug or a rubber grommet at the drain, that part is routinely pulled out for cleaning and pushed back only part of the way. Water then leaves through the gap around it rather than down the pipe.
- A blocked condensate drain path — Next, and close behind: a restricted drain does not stop the water, it delays it. The melt pools where it cannot be seen, then arrives all at once as a puddle that looks far bigger than the fault behind it.
- Contents damming the drain trough — Then: packaging is the usual culprit: a bag or a carton settles into the channel, water backs up behind it, and nothing about the machine is faulty at all.
- A split drain hose or a failed seam — Last, and the reason the order matters: once the simple causes are excluded, what is left is a route the water should not have: a hose that has hardened and split, or a seam that has opened. This is the least common cause and the only one on this list that is not owner work.
The order to work in
- Check the drain fitting is seated — Find the drain fitting at the outlet and press it home. It should sit flush, with no gap you can see light through.
- Clear and test the compartment drain — With the unit emptied, look for standing water in the trough before you touch anything. A trough that is wet while the plate is dry means the outlet, not the seal.
- Empty the cabinet and look at the channel — Take everything out and look along the floor channel for a bag, a wrapper or a container sitting in it. Then reload leaving the channel and the cold plate clear.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Isolate the unit at the plug or the breaker before any panel comes off - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Mop the floor first: standing water underneath a cabinet you are about to tip or move is how this job hurts people.

When this stops being owner work
Call once the drain has been proven clear, the cabinet proven level and the compartment emptied, and the water is still arriving: what remains is behind a panel. Call straight away if the water is anywhere near the machinery end, if a breaker trips, or if the cabinet is warm as well as wet.
