The short answer
Most new noises from the HS line come from something spinning or something touching, not from the refrigeration itself — fans, a fan blade meeting frost, or a cabinet passing its vibration into the floor. On this page the evaporator fan is checked first: a noise that stops when the door opens has exactly one source. What an owner actually observes on the HS line
- A hum or buzz from the back, at floor level — The condenser fan or the compressor mount.
- Clicking every few minutes with no cooling change — A relay or the defrost timer doing its job.
- NEAR MISS — a loud noise plus a cabinet that is warming — Then the noise is a symptom of the cooling fault and not a separate job.

- The evaporator fan — worn bearing, or a blade striking frost — Ranked first on the HS line because the door-switch test settles it in seconds: hold the switch in, listen, then let it go. A noise that appears and disappears with the switch is this fan and nothing else.
- Frost or ice fouling a fan, or the ice maker in its harvest — Ice build-up gives the fan something to hit; a harvest cycle drops cubes and runs a small motor. The first is a fault worth chasing, the second is the appliance working.
- The condenser fan — debris in the blade, or a failing bearing — The condenser fan runs with the compressor and lives where dust, hair and the occasional dropped object collect. A blade touching debris clatters; a dry bearing hums at a different pitch than the compressor.
- The cabinet is not level, or is touching something — At the bottom, but do it anyway before ordering a part: rocking the cabinet by a corner and hearing the noise change is the cheapest diagnosis on this page.
The diagnostic order, and the reason for it
- First — hold the freezer door switch in and listen, then release it — A noise that starts and stops with the switch belongs to the evaporator fan. That single test separates the interior causes from everything behind the cabinet.
- Then — empty the freezer and look at the vents and the back wall — Frost thick enough to reach the fan is the cause, and it is also evidence of a defrost fault that will warm the cabinet if it is left.
- Only then — take the base grille off and look into the machine compartment with a torch — Look for debris in the fan guard and check the blade turns freely with the power off. Most clattering from floor level is found here in under five minutes.
- STOP here if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — Everything above can be done with nothing dismantled; past it the checks need test equipment.

Read this before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before reaching into the machine compartment or removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the condenser fan can restart without warning while the cabinet is live. Never put a hand near a running fan blade to test it, and never chip ice off an evaporator with a screwdriver: a punctured tube ends the appliance.
When it stops being an owner job
Call when the noise is a grind or a squeal that rises with running time, when it comes from the sealed system rather than from a fan, or when it arrives together with a cabinet that is no longer holding temperature. On the HS line, call rather than continue if the evaporator cover has to come off to reach the fan. Call immediately if the noise is accompanied by a burning smell, a tripping breaker, or oil anywhere in the machine compartment — oil outside the tubing means the sealed system is open.
