GE Refrigerator Door Switch Replacement — Fixing Lights and Fan Issues
The door switch on a GE refrigerator performs multiple functions: it turns the interior light on when the door opens, turns it off when the door closes, and on most models, it controls the evaporator fan (fan stops when door opens to prevent warm air from being drawn across the cold evaporator coils). A failed switch means interior lights that stay on (heating the compartment) or an evaporator fan that never stops (or never starts).
Switch Types
Plunger switch — a mechanical button on the door frame that is depressed by the door. Found on standard GE models. When the door opens, the plunger extends, completing the light circuit and breaking the fan circuit.
Magnetic reed switch — used on some Profile and newer models. A magnet in the door triggers a reed switch in the frame. No moving plunger to wear out, but the reed can fail from contact erosion.

Symptoms
- Interior light stays on with door closed — the switch is stuck in the open position. The light heats the interior, raising temperature and causing the compressor to run overtime. You may notice the light through the door gasket or feel warmth in the compartment.
- Interior light does not work — the switch is stuck closed, or the bulb is burned out. Check the bulb first.
- Evaporator fan runs with door open — the switch is not breaking the fan circuit. You will hear the fan running whenever you open the door.
- Evaporator fan does not run — the switch is stuck open, keeping the fan off even with the door closed. The fridge compartment warms up.

Step-by-Step Replacement
The door switch is accessible from inside the refrigerator — no disassembly of the cabinet is needed.
- Unplug the refrigerator
- Locate the switch — a small button on the door frame (top or side), usually visible as a raised or recessed plunger
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry the switch out of its mounting (it snaps into the frame)
- Disconnect the wire harness (pull the connector straight off)
- Connect the wire harness to the new switch
- Snap the new switch into the mounting hole until it clicks
Testing
Plug in the refrigerator. Open the door — the light should turn on. Close the door and listen for the evaporator fan (it should start within 30 seconds of the door closing). Open the door again — the fan should stop.

Light Stays On Problem
A door switch stuck in the "door open" position keeps the interior light on continuously. A standard incandescent bulb generates significant heat — enough to raise the compartment temperature by 5-10 degrees F. LED bulbs generate less heat but still consume unnecessary energy. If you suspect the light stays on, place a smartphone in the refrigerator recording video, close the door, and check the footage to see if the light remains on.
A $10 door switch can cause $50+ in extra energy costs per year if the light stays on. Quick replacement saves money. Book service
