GE Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement — RPWFE System Guide
GE refrigerators use proprietary water filters with RFID authentication — the RPWFE filter contains a chip that the refrigerator reads to verify it is a genuine GE filter. This system, unique to GE, means third-party filters will not work unless they include a compatible RFID chip. Understanding this system saves frustration when your new filter triggers a lockout.
GE's RFID Filter System
The RPWFE filter (and its predecessor, the RPWF without RFID) is a twist-in cartridge that filters water for the ice maker and water dispenser. Starting around 2015, GE added an RFID chip to the filter that communicates with the refrigerator's main control board. When you install a filter, the board reads the chip and verifies authenticity. If the chip is not present or not recognized, the water dispenser is locked out.
RPWFE (with RFID) — current standard, required on most 2015+ models RPWF (without RFID) — older filter type, fits the same housing but lacks the chip. Will physically install but triggers lockout on RPWFE-equipped models. MWF/MWFP — used on older GE side-by-side and top-freezer models with a different filter housing (push-in rather than twist-in)

When to Replace
GE recommends filter replacement every 6 months or 300 gallons, whichever comes first. The refrigerator tracks usage and displays a filter status indicator:
- Green — filter is good
- Yellow — approaching replacement interval
- Red — replace immediately
After installing a new filter, press and hold the Reset Filter button for 3 seconds to clear the indicator and reset the usage counter.
Filter Location by Model
| Model Series | Filter Location |
|---|---|
| GSS (side-by-side) | Upper right corner inside refrigerator |
| GNE/GFE (French door) | Inside, upper right of fresh food compartment |
| GDE (bottom-freezer) | Base grille at front bottom |
| Profile PFE/PYE | Inside, rear center of fresh food compartment |
| Cafe CVE/CYE | Inside, upper right |
The filter twists counterclockwise a quarter-turn to remove and clockwise to install. No tools required.

Part Numbers and Pricing
| Filter Type | Part Number | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| RPWFE (RFID, current) | RPWFE | $40-$55 |
| MWF/MWFP (older models) | MWF | $30-$45 |
| Filter bypass plug | WR02X13680 | $8-$15 |
The filter bypass plug allows you to use the water dispenser and ice maker without a filter installed. The water is unfiltered but the lockout is bypassed. This is useful temporarily while waiting for a replacement filter.

RFID Lockout Troubleshooting
If you install a new RPWFE filter and the dispenser remains locked:
- Remove the filter and reinstall it firmly — the RFID chip must make proper contact
- Press and hold Reset Filter for 3 seconds
- If lockout persists, try a different filter — occasionally the RFID chip is defective from the factory
- Verify you have an RPWFE (with chip) and not an RPWF (without chip) — the packaging looks nearly identical
Third-party filters claiming RPWFE compatibility must include a functioning RFID chip. Many budget alternatives skip the chip and will trigger lockout. Buy from authorized GE parts dealers to avoid this issue.
The Real Cost of DIY

Replacement Procedure
- Locate the filter housing inside the refrigerator
- Twist the old filter counterclockwise a quarter-turn
- Pull the filter straight out (some water may drip — have a towel ready)
- Remove the cap from the new filter
- Insert the new filter into the housing and twist clockwise a quarter-turn until it locks
- Run 2-3 gallons of water through the dispenser to flush the new filter (water will appear cloudy initially — this is normal carbon fines)
- Press and hold Reset Filter for 3 seconds to clear the indicator
Water Quality Impact
An expired GE water filter still passes water but with reduced contaminant removal. The activated carbon becomes saturated with captured contaminants and can begin releasing them back into the water. Beyond 6 months or 300 gallons, replacement is a water quality issue, not just a light on the refrigerator.
Filter replacement is simple, but persistent lockout issues or water quality concerns may need a technician. Book service
