GE Refrigerator Door Closure Replacement — Fixing a Door That Won't Seal
GE refrigerators do not use a traditional latch — they rely on magnetic gaskets and door cams (closers) that use gravity to pull the door shut when released within a few inches of closed. When the door will not stay closed or the door-ajar alarm beeps constantly, the door cam, hinge, or gasket is the issue.
Door Cams vs Hinges vs Gaskets
Door cams (closers) — small plastic cams at the top and bottom hinge pins that use the weight of the door to create a self-closing action. When worn, the door stops self-closing and may swing open on its own.
Hinges — the metal brackets that support the door. GE refrigerator doors are heavy (especially French door models with water/ice dispensers), and hinges can bend or the pin holes can elongate, causing the door to sag and misalign with the gasket.
Door gasket — the magnetic rubber seal around the door perimeter. A worn gasket loses its magnetic pull and flexibility, allowing warm air to infiltrate.

Door Cam Replacement
Preparation
Empty the door bins to reduce weight. You will need a helper to hold the door during hinge manipulation.
Procedure
- Open the refrigerator door fully
- Locate the door cams at the top and bottom hinge pins — small plastic pieces that the hinge pin passes through
- On most GE models, the top hinge cover must be removed (2 screws or snap-off cover) to access the top cam
- Lift the door slightly (have a helper support it) and slide the old cam off the hinge pin
- Slide the new cam onto the pin with the correct orientation (the cam has a high side and low side — high side faces toward the cabinet)
- Lower the door back onto the cam and test the self-closing action
Test by opening the door to approximately 30 degrees and releasing — it should slowly swing closed on its own.

French Door Alignment
GE French door refrigerators are particularly sensitive to door alignment because both doors must meet at the center mullion with equal gap. If one door sags from a worn cam, it creates a gap at the center where warm air infiltrates. After replacing cams, adjust both doors so the top edges of the left and right doors are level. Use the adjustable feet at the bottom of the refrigerator to fine-tune alignment.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Profile Door-Ajar Alarm
GE Profile refrigerators have a door-ajar alarm that beeps after the door is open for 3 minutes. If the alarm triggers while the door appears closed, the door is not fully sealed — a worn cam or sagging hinge prevents the door from reaching the magnetic gasket engagement point. Replacing the cam typically resolves the alarm.
A door that does not seal wastes energy and stresses the compressor. Our technicians adjust and replace door components for a proper seal. Book service
