Kenmore Dryer F70: Communication Failure Between Boards

What F70 Tells You

Your Kenmore dryer displays F70 and may be completely unresponsive to button presses, or it may flash the code repeatedly while ignoring all input. On Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryers (model prefix 110.xxxxx), F70 signals a communication breakdown between the main control board (located behind the back panel or top panel) and the user interface (UI) board (located behind the control panel where you select cycles and settings).

Check Your Model Prefix

F70 applies to 110-series Kenmore dryers (Whirlpool-built). If your prefix is 796 (LG) or 417 (Frigidaire), your dryer uses a different manufacturer's error code system.

The Communication Link

These two boards exchange data continuously via a serial communication bus carried through a multi-wire harness:

Main board (MCB): Controls all physical operations — motor relay, heater relay, sensor inputs, safety circuits. Located behind the back panel or in the top panel area.

User interface board (UIB): Handles the display, LED indicators, and button inputs. Located behind the control panel fascia.

The harness connecting them carries power (for the UI board), ground, and serial data lines. When any of the data lines break, both boards lose the ability to coordinate — the UI cannot send user commands and the main board cannot display status.

Connector Re-Seat: The First Fix

Many F70 cases resolve by re-seating the harness connectors at both boards. Dryer vibration from thousands of tumbling cycles gradually works connectors out of their sockets. Even a fraction of a millimeter of unseating can break a data line connection.

1. Disconnect power
2. Remove the panels covering both boards
3. Unplug each connector, inspect pins for corrosion or bending
4. Plug each connector back firmly — you should feel the latch engage
5. Restore power and test

This re-seating fixes approximately 40% of F70 occurrences.

Wire Harness Damage

If re-seating does not resolve F70, trace the harness between boards. Look for:

• Pinch points where the harness passes through metal panels or frame openings
• Chafed insulation where wires contact sharp sheet metal edges
• Heat damage near the heater area or exhaust duct
• Rodent damage (particularly on dryers in garages or basements)

A break in any data conductor causes F70. Test each conductor individually with a multimeter in continuity mode.

Harness repair: splice the broken conductor(s) with solder and heat-shrink tubing. If multiple conductors are damaged, replace the harness: $15-$35.

Board Failures

If the harness and all connectors test good, one of the boards has a failed communication circuit:

Diagnosing which board failed:

• If the display is completely dark (no LEDs, no segments) but you hear the dryer attempt mechanical operation when Start is pressed (listen for motor or relay clicks), the UI board has likely failed. UI board: $40-$100.
• If the display shows F70 or other information but no mechanical functions respond at all, the main board's communication receiver may have failed. Main board: $80-$180.

If both display and mechanical functions are dead, either the power supply circuit on the main board has failed (affecting both boards) or the harness is completely severed.

F70 After a Power Surge

Power surges from lightning or grid events can damage the communication transceiver ICs on both boards simultaneously. If F70 appeared after a storm or power outage, both boards may need replacement. Total cost for both boards: $120-$280 in parts.

Consider installing a surge protector rated for dryers on the outlet to prevent recurrence.

F70 and no buttons respond. Is the dryer dead? Not dead — the communication link between boards is broken. The individual boards and all mechanical components may be perfectly functional. Often a connector re-seat resolves the issue.
