GE Dishwasher PF: Power Failure Recovery — Not a Malfunction
PF is informational, not an error. The dishwasher lost power during a cycle and is alerting you. Press Start to resume the interrupted cycle, or Cancel to drain and start fresh. The dishwasher itself is functioning normally.
Resuming vs Restarting After PF
Resume (press Start): The machine picks up approximately where it left off. Appropriate if the outage was brief (under 30 minutes). Water remaining from before the outage is reused.
Restart (press Cancel, then select new cycle): The machine drains first, then you start a fresh cycle. Better if the outage was extended — water has cooled and detergent has lost effectiveness.
Just clear PF (press any button): If you do not need to run a cycle right now, PF clears from the display.

When PF Repeats Without Known Outages
Electrical Supply Investigation
Shared circuit: Dishwashers should be on a dedicated 15A circuit. Sharing with the disposal, microwave, or outlets causes voltage drops when those devices start, which the board interprets as power loss.
Junction box connections: Most GE dishwashers are hardwired. Loose wire nuts in the junction box (under the machine) create intermittent power breaks. Check all connections for tightness and corrosion.
GFCI interference: Plug-in dishwashers downstream of a GFCI outlet experience nuisance tripping from humidity or minor ground faults elsewhere on the circuit. The brief power loss triggers PF.
Board power supply degradation: The board's internal AC-to-DC converter can degrade, causing the microprocessor to brown out intermittently. Random PF codes result. Board replacement resolves this.
Diagnosing the Power Source
- Check breaker panel — is the dishwasher breaker tripped or in middle position?
- Did other kitchen appliances also lose power? If yes, the outage was real (not a dishwasher issue)
- If only the dishwasher shows PF, the problem is in its power supply chain — junction box, cord, outlet, or board
