A gas oven igniter is a glow bar that heats to approximately 2,500 degrees F to ignite the gas flowing to the burner. When it fails partially, it can stay energized at full temperature even after the burner lights and the gas valve closes. This continuous high-temperature element can overheat the broiler pan, insulation, and surrounding components. A thermal fuse prevents this by cutting power if the igniter exceeds its design temperature.
