Amana Dryer ERR Code: The Door Latch Fix
the ERR code on an Amana dryer means the door has not been completely closed and latched. The dryer will not run unless the door is closed, so the code is a refusal rather than a breakdown.

A dryer that will not start is not always broken#
The instinct when a dryer refuses to start is that something inside it has failed. ERR describes a much smaller problem: the door is not latched, and a dryer that cannot confirm a closed door will not begin tumbling. That behaviour is deliberate — the same interlock that stops the drum when you open the door mid-load also stops it from ever starting.
So the question is not what failed. It is whether the latch actually engaged, which is easy to get wrong when a door swings shut convincingly without seating.

What ERR is checking#
| Condition | Result |
|---|---|
| The door is completely closed and latched | The dryer will run |
| The door has not been completely closed and latched | ERR, and the dryer will not run |
There is no third state. The dryer is asking one question and reporting one answer, which is why the diagnosis starts and usually ends at the door.
Working through it#
- Push on the door to engage the latch or latches. A door that looks shut has not necessarily seated, and pushing is how you find out.
- If ERR is still displayed, power the unit down by turning off the circuit breaker or breakers for 5 minutes.
- Power the unit back up by turning on the circuit breaker or breakers.
- Monitor the dryer for 5 minutes to make sure the error code does not display again.
That fourth step is the one people skip, and it is the one that tells you whether the problem is solved or merely quiet. A code that returns within those minutes is behaving differently from one that stays away, and knowing which you have is worth the wait.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Is it worth calling anyone?#
Usually not. Latching the door properly costs nothing, and the power cycle costs a few minutes — between them they resolve the ordinary version of this code entirely.
What changes the picture is ERR reappearing during that five-minute watch with the door firmly latched. At that point the dryer is failing to see a door it is looking straight at, and the fault sits in the sensing rather than in the door. That is a diagnosis worth having done properly, because the alternative is guessing at parts on a machine that is otherwise fine.
Book a diagnosis rather than a guess#
If your Amana dryer keeps posting ERR after the latch is engaged and the breaker cycle is done, an EasyBear technician can test the door circuit and tell you exactly where the signal is being lost. Book a visit online and we will come to you.
