Whirlpool Oven Vibrating or Shaking: Causes & Fix

It's nearly always a fan#

Ovens have two fans: a convection fan at the rear that circulates heat, and a cooling blower that protects the controls. Either can vibrate when its blade is bent or off-balance, its bearing is worn, or something has lodged against it. A worn bearing hums or grinds; a bent or debris-struck blade rattles and shakes the whole range.

Where the shaking comes from#

• The convection fan. A blade bent from a dropped rack or a pan, or a bearing worn with age, sets the rear of the oven buzzing during any convection cycle. The most common source.
• The cooling blower. This fan runs during and after baking to cool the electronics; a worn or debris-clogged blower rattles even after the oven is off.
• A loose panel or rack. A back panel screw backed out, or racks sitting unevenly, can buzz in sympathy with a running fan and mimic a motor fault.
• A range that isn't level. A freestanding range on uneven feet rocks and amplifies any vibration.

What to check#

Note exactly when it shakes: during a convection bake points at the convection fan, after the oven is off points at the cooling blower. With the oven cool, check that racks are seated and the range is level and its feet firm. If the noise is a grind or a rattle tied to a fan, the fan blade or motor is the fix — a technician job at the rear of the cavity.

Before the holiday cooking season#

A rattling oven is both distracting and a sign of a fan on its way out, right when you need reliable convection for holiday baking. Check the racks, level, and fan noise now so a worn bearing does not fail mid-roast. If a fan is grinding or a blade is bent, book a visit and a technician will replace the fan and bearing.
