- Safety: Disconnect power at the breaker — Samsung ranges run 240V for the heating elements and 120V for the controls, and both are dangerous. Confirm the display is dark before touching any wiring, and on gas models close the gas valve too.
Step by step#
- Kill power and confirm. Switch off the range's dedicated breaker (typically a 40- or 50-amp double-pole), and verify the clock, display, and oven light are all dead. Close the gas supply on a gas model.
- Access the board. Depending on where the board sits, remove the rear panel (4-6 Phillips screws), the control-panel fascia (screws under the front lip or at each end), or open from inside the cavity. Samsung's modular layout gives clear access to most serviceable parts.
- Photograph, then disconnect. Shoot every wire connection before touching it — Samsung color-codes the wires, but positions shift between model years. Pull each terminal off by the connector, never the wire.
- Confirm the failure. Inspect the board for the classic signs — a capacitor with a domed or split top, or crusty residue around its base — and meter the suspect part before swapping it, so you are not replacing a good component when the real fault is wiring or the board itself. Record your readings.
- Fit the replacement. Set the new part in the same orientation, reconnect every wire to its terminal from your photos, secure the mounting screws, and check that no wire is pinched or resting against a heat source.
- Reassemble and test. Refit the panels, restore power at the breaker, and exercise the function the part serves — for elements, run full power for 5 minutes and check for even heat; for controls, step through the modes and displays.

If it still misbehaves#
- New part does nothing: re-verify every connection against your photo, and check for a blown board fuse (a small glass fuse on some Samsung boards) that the original failure may have taken out.
- An error code appears: the board may need a reset — kill the breaker for 5 minutes and restore power; a code that persists suggests a second fault.
- Burning smell on first use: a new heating element often gives off a brief smell as manufacturing residue burns off, clearing in 10-15 minutes; if it persists or smokes, shut off and recheck connections.
- Self-clean lockout tripped in testing: hold Cancel for 3 seconds to exit; the door unlocks once the oven cools below its lockout threshold.

Why board capacitors fail#
The electrolytic capacitors on a control board smooth the low-voltage DC that runs the microcontroller and relays, and they are usually the first thing to age out. Heat from the nearby range cavity and normal electrical stress dry out the electrolyte over years until the capacitor can no longer hold its value, and a failing one often bulges at the top or vents a little crusty residue as it goes. Because the board depends on clean, steady voltage, one weak capacitor can make the whole control act erratically — flickering displays, dropped functions, or a board that resets itself — long before it looks obviously dead. That is why a visual scan for a domed or leaking capacitor is the fastest first check, and why matching the replacement's capacitance and voltage rating exactly matters: too little capacitance and the board still misbehaves, too low a voltage rating and the new part fails early.
