Viking Gas Stove Uneven Flame: Causes & Fix

A healthy Viking burner shows a tight blue ring of evenly spaced cones, running hard at high and holding a steady simmer down low. Tall yellow tips mean too little air and unburnt gas; a roaring, lifting flame means too much. A dead patch in the ring is a plugged port, not an electrical fault.

Common causes on a high-output burner#

• Blocked ports. Boil-overs and grease plug the slots around the burner head, so the flame skips them. The leading cause.
• A cap off its seat. Viking's brass burner cap has to drop squarely onto the head; knocked askew during cleaning, it throws the ring lopsided.
• A drifted air shutter. These high-BTU burners are sensitive to the air-to-gas mix, so a shutter that has moved tips the flame yellow or makes it lift.
• A fouled orifice. The brass jet can carbon up and starve one burner against the rest.
• Wrong gas conversion. A pro range set up for the wrong fuel — natural gas versus propane — burns yellow or lifts across every burner, since the orifices and shutters must match the gas.

Clean it the right way#

With the burner cold, take off the brass cap and head and soak them in warm soapy water. Clear each port with a straightened paper clip — never a wooden pick that can snap off — then dry both parts fully so leftover water does not cause a separate clicking. Seat the head on its pins and drop the cap flat and centred. An even blue ring means done; a lingering yellow flame needs a shutter, orifice, or conversion check by a technician.

Uneven burners cost you most when a big pot needs strong, even heat for a holiday meal. Pull the caps and clear the ports now so every burner runs clean and blue before the busy days begin. If a burner stays yellow or lazy after a thorough clean, book a visit and a technician will set the shutter, orifice, and conversion.
