Viking Gas Stove Keeps Clicking: How to Fix It

Silence it first#

The clicking is an annoyance and slowly wears the igniter, not escaping gas. To stop it now, switch off the range at the breaker. You can keep cooking by holding a long lighter to the burner and turning the knob to light it by hand.

Find the clicking burner#

Viking's heavy grates and deep burner bases trap boil-overs, so start by pinning down the source:

1. With the range off, listen along the cooktop — the click is loudest over the burner that is firing.
2. Lift that burner's grate, cap, and head and look for standing liquid or food packed around the electrode.
3. Check whether the click follows one knob or fires with everything off — a single burner points to its switch, all of them to the shared module.

Dry it and clean it#

Blot up every drop under the cap, then dry the electrode and its base fully; a fan or cool hair dryer helps, and trapped moisture can take an hour or two to clear on its own. Lift any hardened food from the electrode gap with a wooden pick and reseat the cap square. Turn the suspect knob briskly between light and off a dozen times to free a sticky rotary switch. If a burner still clicks bone-dry, its switch is stuck; if several click together, the spark module is the likely fault and gets replaced.

Before the holiday cooking season#

A range that ticks through every meal is worst when the kitchen is busy with guests. If a spill or a deep clean left yours clicking, isolate the burner and dry it now so the cooktop is quiet before the holiday cooking begins. If it keeps clicking when dry, book a visit and a technician will test the rotary switches and swap the spark module.
