Maytag Dishwasher Gasket Replacement Guide

A Maytag holds several seals, but only one is a routine replacement: the door (tub) gasket that runs around the tub opening and compresses against the inner door panel when you close it. Some models add a shorter lower door gasket that catches drips during loading. The internal seals around the sump, spray-arm mounts, and fill port rarely fail and are touched only during a major component swap. What makes the door gasket wear faster on a Maytag is the PowerBlast cycle: it drives a more forceful spray toward the door edges, and that pressure concentrates at the bottom corners, flattening the rubber there before the rest of the perimeter gives out.

Is it really the gasket?#

Before you order a part, rule out two impostors: a worn door latch that leaves the door slightly ajar, and an unlevel machine that shoves water pressure to one side. Both mimic a failed gasket. Adjust the front leveling feet and confirm the latch pulls the door fully shut first.

Reseating the gasket#

1. Leave the power alone — a gasket-only job touches no electrical parts. Open the door fully.
2. Starting at the top center, peel the old gasket out of the channel; it is press-fit, not glued, so it pulls free by hand.
3. Work all the way around, noting how the corners fold at the 90-degree turns.
4. Clean the channel with warm soapy water on a cloth, clearing residue, mold, and old gasket crumbs.
5. Press the new gasket in from the top center, working down both sides evenly to keep it centered.
6. Fold the corners to match the turns without stretching or cutting — the gasket has enough material.
7. Finish the bottom last, making sure it sits flat with no twists, then close the door and check for even compression all the way around.
8. Run a cycle and watch the floor during the first several minutes.

No tools are needed; a flashlight helps you inspect the channel.

Cross-reference and lifespan#

Maytag dishwashers are built on the Whirlpool Corporation platform and share the bulk of their parts — roughly 80 percent — with Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Amana. The same gasket often lists under a Whirlpool cross-reference (a W10 or WP number) at a lower price, so search both before buying, and skip universal gaskets, whose channel and corner geometry rarely match. A door gasket typically lasts 8 to 12 years, dropping to 6 to 8 with frequent PowerBlast use or hard water. To stretch it, wipe the seal monthly, clean mold with baking soda and water rather than bleach (which degrades rubber), and keep the machine level so pressure spreads evenly across the seal.

The lower gasket and a warranty check#

Some Maytag models add a second, shorter seal along the bottom of the door that catches drips as you load — if you see water only at the very bottom edge, inspect that lower gasket separately from the main perimeter seal. Also check coverage before you buy: Maytag carries a long limited parts warranty on select dishwasher components such as the racks, the stainless tub, and the chopper blade, and a covered part can turn a paid repair into a free one, so look it up with your model and serial number. Whatever you end up ordering, keep the cross-reference habit — the same seal listed under a Whirlpool number is built to the same specification and frequently costs less.
