What an uneven flame is telling you#

A healthy gas burner makes a steady blue flame with small yellow tips. When the flame goes yellow, orange, or lopsided, the air-to-gas mix is off, ports are blocked, or a part is damaged — and beyond wasting gas and heating pans unevenly, a yellow flame can give off carbon monoxide, so it's worth fixing promptly.

Decode which maker built your Kenmore#

Because Kenmore ranges are made by Whirlpool, LG, or Electrolux depending on the model, the burner parts you may need come from the parent brand. The first three digits of the model number say who: 110 is Whirlpool, 796 is LG, and 253 is Electrolux. Match any replacement burner head or orifice to that maker.

The five usual causes#

• Clogged burner ports (most common). Boil-overs, grease, and food bits plug individual ports, so some throw tall flames and others none. Soak the cap and head in warm soapy water and clear each port with a straight pin or needle — never a toothpick, which snaps off inside.
• A misaligned cap. The cap has to sit flat and centered; tilt it and gas is pushed to one side, tall there and weak opposite. It usually slips after a careless clean — lift it, recenter it, and press it home.
• An air shutter that's off. The shutter sets how much air mixes in before combustion: too little makes yellow, sooty flames, too much makes noisy flames that lift and blow out. It's a sliding plate on the burner tube, reachable once the cooktop is off; slide it until the flame is blue with small yellow tips.
• The wrong orifice. Natural-gas and LP/propane burners use different orifices. If your Kenmore was converted to propane and one burner's orifice was never swapped, that burner burns wrong — natural-gas orifices are the larger of the two.
• Low gas pressure. If every burner is weak, suspect pressure: a half-closed shutoff valve, a kinked flex connector, or a supply-side problem. Confirm the shutoff is fully open and the flex line has no sharp bends.

Clean it and check it#

Lift all the caps and heads, soak them in warm soapy water for about fifteen minutes, pin each port clear, and dry them fully before they go back. Reseat each cap so it spins freely without wobble. Then light each burner: blue with small yellow tips is right, pure yellow means more air, and a noisy blue flame that lifts means too much. If all burners stay weak, have the utility check supply pressure.

Before the holiday season#

Even simmering and a fast boil matter when you're cooking for a crowd, and a fouled burner fights you the whole day. Give the caps and ports a deep clean before the holidays so every burner runs a clean blue flame. If cleaning and realignment don't fix it, or you suspect an orifice or pressure problem, book a visit — the technician carries a gas-pressure gauge and Kenmore burner parts.
