Kenmore Dishwasher Motor Replacement Guide

The motor design splits sharply by manufacturer. Whirlpool-built 665 models use a separate motor and pump joined by a coupler, reachable from the bottom and replaceable on its own. LG-built Elite 722 models use an integrated direct-drive motor and pump that is more compact but almost always replaced as one assembly. Decoding your prefix tells you which repair you are facing.

Confirm It Is Really the Motor#

Several problems imitate a dead wash motor, so rule them out before ordering an expensive part:

• Weak spray-arm rotation — check for clogs in the spray-arm nozzles and the chopper screen before blaming the motor
• No wash after filling — the wash-motor relay on the control board may have failed; listen for a relay click when the wash phase should start
• Intermittent washing — on capacitor-start motors, a failing capacitor causes stop-start behavior before the motor itself dies

Signs that really do point at the motor: spray arms that will not turn despite a full tub, loud grinding or screeching when wash should engage, a motor that hums but will not spin (seized bearings), or the breaker tripping the instant the wash cycle starts (a shorted winding).

The Meter Test#

With power off and the motor accessed from below, check continuity across the motor windings. A healthy motor reads roughly 5 to 15 ohms between windings. An open circuit, or a near-zero reading under an ohm, confirms the motor has failed and is not just jammed.

Decode Your Builder#

• 665 (Whirlpool) — separate motor and pump on a coupler, bottom-mounted, each part replaceable on its own.
• 722 (LG, Kenmore Elite) — integrated direct-drive motor and pump, usually swapped as a complete unit.
• 587 (Frigidaire) — bottom-mounted motor-and-pump combination.
• 630 (Samsung) — integrated wash motor.

Ordering the part under the true builder's name instead of the Kenmore label typically saves 30 to 40% on the identical component.

Replacing a 665 (Whirlpool) Motor#

1. Cut power at the breaker and shut off the water.
2. Remove the kickplate below the door.
3. Disconnect the drain hose and the motor wiring (two or three connectors).
4. Slide a shallow pan under the motor to catch residual water.
5. Remove the two or three mounting bolts (5/16-inch or 1/4-inch).
6. Separate the motor from the pump; inspect the rubber coupler for wear while you are in there.
7. Fit the new motor, secure the bolts, and reconnect the wiring and drain hose.
8. Restore water and power, run a wash, and confirm the spray arms turn with real pressure.

Replacing a 722 (LG Elite) Assembly#

The integrated unit comes out whole: disconnect power and water, tip the machine onto its back on a protected floor, unplug the multi-pin harness and all hose connections, pull the three or four mounting screws, and swap the assembly. Transfer any adapters that did not ship with the new part, reconnect, stand it up, and test.

Tools: 5/16-inch and 1/4-inch nut drivers, a #2 Phillips, channel-lock pliers, a multimeter, a shallow pan, and towels.

Is It Worth Fixing?#

Motor work is one of the pricier dishwasher repairs, and at the top of professional pricing it approaches the cost of a new budget machine. A fair rule: if the repair runs past about 50% of a comparable new dishwasher and yours is over ten years old, replacement usually wins. Under eight years with the motor as the only fault, repair makes sense. Whirlpool-built 665 motors tend to last 10 to 15 years as durable induction units, while LG-built 722 direct-drive motors run 8 to 12, since higher speeds generate more bearing heat.
