The label on the front tells you nothing about the part; the first three digits of the model number tell you the real maker.

Decode before you shop#

• 665 — Whirlpool (most Kenmore dishwashers from 2000–2020).
• 587 — Frigidaire/Electrolux.
• 630 — Samsung (newer models).
• 722 — LG (Kenmore Elite).

Symptoms by platform#

Whirlpool (665): unresponsive buttons or wrong cycles, the Clean light flashing seven times (its board-failure code), a tub that fills but never starts the wash motor, or a latched door that won't begin.

LG Elite (722): LE or IE codes that return after a power cycle, a touchpad that loses zones (some buttons dead), a unit that powers on then shuts off within seconds, or a garbled display.

Across both, tripping the kitchen breaker, a burning smell behind the door panel, or intermittent flickering operation all point at a board failing progressively — and replacing it early keeps erratic voltage from taking out the wash motor or heating element too.

Find the right board#

• Whirlpool 665: W10854217 fits the 665.13xxx–15xxx series, W11305023 the newer 665.13xxx (2018+), and W10588603 the older 665.12xxx.
• LG Elite 722: EBR86473415 fits the 722.1430x series, EBR73739203 older Elite models.

Match the full model number, not just the prefix, and cross-reference the OEM part number — the identical Whirlpool board typically runs 30–40% less than the same board packaged under the Kenmore label.

Replacing the board#

Whirlpool (665): cut power at the breaker, remove the inner door panel (8–10 Torx T20 screws), take the outer panel's top screws, and separate the panels while supporting the outer one. The board sits at the top of the inner door behind the interface; photograph the 3–5 look-alike connectors, release the plastic tabs, transfer any brackets or heat sinks, seat the new board, and reconnect to match your photos. Rebuild the panels with the gasket seated, then run the self-test (Heated Dry, Normal, Heated Dry, Normal within 5 seconds).

LG Elite (722): cut power, remove the outer door panel, unclip the PCB housing, and disconnect the ribbon cables and harnesses noting orientation — the LG board uses Phillips #2 screw mounts rather than clips. Swap, reconnect, reassemble, and enter LG diagnostics (Power then Start within 3 seconds, then Start).

Tools: Torx T20 (Whirlpool) or Phillips #2 (LG), a 1/4-inch nut driver, needle-nose pliers, a phone for photos, and a multimeter to confirm incoming voltage.

Lifespan and protection#

Whirlpool boards run about 8–12 years — the W10854217 generation is notably reliable, while the older W10588603 saw more failures around year 6 — LG Elite boards 6–10, and Samsung 630 boards an estimated 7–10. Power surges are the number-one killer, followed by steam slipping past a failed door-vent seal and heavy daily use, so a surge protector on the circuit, an annual look at that vent gasket, and skipping cycles during storms all help the board last.

Which platform is the harder job?#

The two aren't equal. A Whirlpool 665 board is a moderate 45-to-60-minute job: the door splits easily, and the real risk is its three-to-five similar-looking connectors, so photographs are your insurance. An LG Elite 722 board is trickier — the ribbon cables tear if you're rough and the housing is tight, so budget extra time and patience. On either, if the dishwasher also has fill or door-latch trouble alongside the board symptoms, have a technician confirm the board is the cause rather than a casualty before you spend on it.
