Before You Start#
Safety warning: Unplug the refrigerator before removing the ice maker, and empty the ice bin so it is easier to handle. Confirm the water shutoff behind the fridge is open — the fill valve needs 20+ PSI to work.
Step-by-Step#
1. Confirm the module is the failure#
Watch a harvest attempt. If the motor never turns, the mold heater never warms, or no water arrives even though the supply is good, the module is the suspect. Rule out the feed side first: a kinked or frozen fill tube and a stuck inlet valve both starve a perfectly good ice maker.
2. Find your model number and tech sheet#
Whirlpool prints the model number on the rating plate on the fresh-food section's left wall, and tapes the tech sheet behind the base grille. Record the model so you order the matching assembly, and keep the sheet handy for the diagnostic entry sequence.
3. Remove the old ice maker#
With power off, take out the mounting screws — most are Torx T20 — that hold the head to the freezer wall. Photograph the wiring, then release the harness by pressing its locking tab and pulling the connector body, never the wires. Separate the fill cup or tube from the module and lift the head out.
4. Verify the old part before installing the new one#
On the meter, check the module's motor and mold heater for resistance in a sensible range — roughly 20–50 ohms for the heating side, with an infinite reading meaning an open circuit — and confirm the switches show continuity where the tech sheet says they should. This last check keeps you from installing a new head when the real fault is upstream wiring.
5. Install the replacement#
Mount the new assembly in the exact position and orientation as the original, using the same screws. Reconnect the fill tube and push the harness on until it clicks. Whirlpool uses plastic mounting tabs on many heads, so tighten the screws snug rather than hard to avoid cracking them.
6. Restore power and force a harvest#
Plug the fridge back in and enter the tech sheet's diagnostic mode to force a harvest cycle. You should hear the motor turn, the mold heater warm briefly, and the fill valve open for about 7 to 8 seconds. The first real batch of ice appears in about 2 to 4 hours once the freezer holds near 0°F. Check again after 24 to 48 hours to be sure the cycle repeats cleanly.
